Mine was the Tamiya Hornet back in 1986!
I was 10 years old and saved up my money from my paper route (Sacramento Union) and bought it from Sheldon's Hobbies! I've always loved everything remote control since I could remember (train set at 5 years old, other remote control cars attached to a wire-LOL) but the Hornet was my first Hobby Grade RC!
I remember getting frustrated while building it b/c I couldn't figure out a certain step and it wasn't fitting right or something like that. It was late at night and my mom came into the room and told me to get some sleep, wake up tomorrow morning and you'll probably figure it out with a fresh mind.
Mom was right!!!
The next morning, I woke up early and IMMEDIATELY figured it out and continued building it! THANKS MOM - as I use that tip to today and it still works!
I also remember when my older cousin visited and he brought his Tamiya Grasshopper! We raced outside my house and both of our families were outside watching it and MY HORNET WAS FASTER THAN MY OLDER COUSIN'S GRASSHOPPER!!!

Of course, the Grasshopper had a smaller motor but man, was that a sweet day being able to show up my older cousin! One of many awesome burned in memories of my Hornet!!!
I later sold it to my friend's little brother and ended up buying the RC10 Graphite years later when I was a teenager. A few years back, I bought the Re-release Hornet XB and it's my shelf queen but I also bought a kit which I need to get around to building. I wonder if I'll get stuck on that step again - LOL! I don't know which one it was but maybe it will come to me when I build the kit again!
