Well, as much as I like my 3.3 Maxx I think it is time to step on up to a savage. I want more power and I know that putting a big block in a maxx is just a money pit due to all the mods that I'll have to do to the drivetrain. I have never owned a savage before and so my question to you is, what is the best savage out there? xl, x, xss...or what? And do you have any advice on the savages and on some upgrades that you think would be worth to buy straight away? Any other advice and/or tips would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Yea I can see where your coming from but I don't need anymore projects. I just want to buy a truck out of the box and be able to bash it without having to do major upgrading. I was going to get another maxx 3.3 but they aren't really the toughest trucks out of the box. I might get a savage xl but someone told me that those 5.9s in them aren't the best. So now I'm reconsidering on the xl. What do you think is the most reliable and the toughest savage out of the box? I here good things about the savage x 4.6 though.

I have an XL and It's been great. I had a defective carb on it and hpi replaced it ASAP but had to wait 3 weeks for it. It does have a rep for running hot and also producing air leaks so you might want to seal it. I'm one of the few that have a k5.9 and its been good to me. I was in the same boat as you with the Tmaxx. Either I upgraded the whole driveline to accommodate the big block or buy a truck that can handle the power. I bought the savage XL and then put an OS 18 in my first gen Tmaxx so now I have a small block monster truck and a big block monster truck. The first mod you might want to do is cut the windshield open to lower the temps and just check the roto start backplate screws. Mine were never loctited and came out.

The new 2011 savage x 4.6 has more upgrades and big bore shocks, all that good stuff for not a lot more money. They are great reliable trucks!

Any Savage you decide to get will be a big improvement over the T-MAXX. I have an older X model and bought an XL back in March. The X has now become a parts donor. I love the XL because it has all the hot upgrades right outta the box. True the 5.9 is a crappy engine but the rest of the truck is brick solid. Plus i like the longer wheel base and extra width it has over the Savage X.

Thanks guys! I am going to be putting my maxx 3.3 for sale and will hopefully be buying a new 2011 savage x soon after.
Thanks for all the advice and suggestions

The XL is the biggest Savage for sure and if your lucky enough to get the K5.9 engine running good then its a beast but as many people have said the K5.9 doesn't have a very god rep for being a dependable motor. I prefer the X myself. I say that never having owned an XL but the X is tough durable and the K4.6 motor runs like a dream....at least mine does. I'm pretty sure most people would agree that the K4.6 is a good motor.

If you want a beast then go for the XL and if worse comes to worse replace the motor with aftermarket. I already have a Losi XXL as my "beast machine" so I am very happy with the X.

I had to replace my 5.9. I went with and Ofna Force .32. Couldnt be happier with it now. But yeah the 4.6 is a good engine also. The reason i went with the XL is because it has the 3 speed and the bullet proof diffs, the humpack, aluminum diff cases, 3 shoe aluminum clutch, and dual disc brakes. Plus the 2.4 Ghz radio system. All right outta the box. I haven't had to buy one single upgrade for it other than the engine. Which everyone will replace at some point. Oh and yeah it is a BEAST!

the 5.9 is a good engine my friend has one with 12 gallons thru it and it still runs mint no compression lost and he bashes the heak out of it but the mid range needle did work its way out once so that the only fault i see with the eng but it has power

Going by the percentage of people who have had them and have had one fail, No, Sorry you are wrong. They are not good engines at all.

Just because you know 1 person who has a 5.9 who has put 12 gallons of fuel through (Sounds pretty magical) does not mean it is a good engine.

Ask around, you will get answers.

hmmm my uncle has a xl with the 5.9 or .36 engine in it when i looked at it it looks gun and awsome but he told me that it does to many wheelies possibly because its 3 speed! so to much acceleration but i think the 4.6 or .28 one is the best

Well all i can say is that engine is a beast for what i have seen, but i wouldn't go out and buy one when there is a whole lot of better engines out there but if i was to buy a vehicle with one included it wouldn't be a bad thing IMHO:)

i wonder were you got your percentages from ???

Thanks for all the advice guys. I ended up buying a brand new savage x 4.6. I love it so far and have had no issues with it. Now I got to sell my maxx so that I can use that $$ to upgrade my savage a little.
Thanks again guys.

That's why I went with the XL. It had all the upgrades I would have done to the Savage X already installed. The only upgrade I decided to get for it was the battery level indicator. The engine on the other hand was a have to thing. I knew a lot of people hated the 5.9 myself included so I was actually glad to see it go. The Ofna Force .32 I have in it now is a much better motor IMO.
