I got an email yesterday from a guy in my area that bought a custom made maxx. He apperently went to my father's house and talked with my bro. He has had this rig for about 6 months and hasn't got it to work right. He says that the engine runs strong but for some reason the truck won't move very well.

It has the 2.5 mill in it, and alot of aluminum. I'm not to familliar with the maxx, but I talked to another buddy and he is saying that it could be the cross pin in the tranny that is broken. He said that even though the pin is borken that it would still move, but it would take a while to get any kind of speed, and would not move in grass or with any other kind of resistance. Does this make any sence? We are going to try to tackle it this saturday. I'm going to check the clutch, and the needle settings before I get into the internals of the tranny.

Let me know if you have any other ideas.
 
I would definately check the clutch first, then the tranny. It's possible it could also have diff problems, but my guess would be clutch or tranny. But always start with the easiest thing to check first.

If the engine runs strong I doubt highly it is the needle settings.
 
He says it runs strong, I haven't even seen it yet. I'm anxous to help this guy!!
 
Ah, I almost forgot, one more thing to check would be the slipper set up. Make sure it has 12 pegs, and that they are not worn down, and that the nut is tightened all the way down and then backed off 1/4 turn.
 
I say slipper...and if he's kept trying to get it going then tell him to bring a few parts if he can get em BEFORE coming over
1: slipper pegs
2: New spur gear (incase the old one is melted from trying too much)
3: clutch shoes and spring (get the MIP setup)
4:CB bearings

worst case scenario is he has spares on parts that wear out anyway....
 
Doubt he can get them in time, but I'll let him know. My buddy said he's got just about any part we need to get it going anyway.
 
Well I got a look at it yesterday and had my buddy come over as well. It turns out that this maxx is a 100% aluminum max with big joe's. Talk about a big fing truck, I'd say it weighs about 20lbs maybe a few lbs more. My buddy and I got to messing with it and it turns out that it wasn't tuned right for starters. And the more we tried to tune it the more questions came out. He got the truck new it was built by a guy in Texas and it came with a traxxx 2.5. IMO not enough grunt to push this beast around.

He had no prior experience with nitro and didn't breakin the mill correctly, he said there were about 15 tanks run through it and there was absolutly no compression in the mill. So my buddy and I said that we would keep it for him and order the parts to fix it. We ordered a new piston/sleeve we got him the 2.5r p/s a new air filter (he had a k&n style filter on it), and a smaller cb. When we get the stuff we're going to put it back together and break-in the mill for him.

I'm glad he came to us for help, he is 27 yrs old and is paralyzed from the waist down and doesn't have 100% use of his hands. His controller is for an air plane with velcro on the ends of the sticks so he can control it. His father is the one helping him out and he is in his late 50s and is trying to learn, but as you know its tough to teach an old dog new tricks. So we're going to get it running for him and then have them come over and he can run with us on our track. Thanks for the suggestions!
 
All I can say is that it's nice to see people helping people. I hope you get it working.

Although, I would have talked to him about getting a bigger engine to haul all the aluminum around. That 2.5 probably doesn't have a chance...

We thought about that, but we don't want him to drop a $200 mill in it and then burn it up cause he doesn't know how to tune, this way he can get a good idea how to tune with the 2.5 then when it lets go again he can go to a tm or something equivalent.
 
yeah he needs to drop some aluminum off it to reduce the weight for those small blocks....those mills are for light cars not metal monsters.....
