I was hearing things about the 5.9 as well ,I was thinking if I got that truck I would sell the 5.9 and put in a LRP 30 or the LRP 32 ,what do you think would that be a good combo , I feel the same way about the truck ,I like the size I need to look more in to the lay out of the truck now that you talk of trick parts,I wonder if I can buy it new as a roller with no motor LOLI have both the X and the XL. I love the XL for its size and all the cool trick parts that come on it out of the box. I agree with Phins Fan though on the 5.9 engine. Other than that the XL is a really good tough and durable platform and i really love the three speed. The X is just as good and just as much fun but only has a 2 speed transmission. Which can be upgraded to a three speed with relative ease. I like the extra length of the XL because it's a bit less squirrley than the shorter model. But that is just my personal preference. You can't go wrong with either one they are both great trucks.
If you install the lrp you should not have to upgrade much because of the bullet proof diffs and the beefier driveline. A defenite concern is the the plastic gear inside the tranny but replace it when it goes. Personally I would drive the 5.9 to the ground and also seal it. I've had mine so far one season and it's been pretty good to me. It does hold a tune and also is plenty of power. The roto start is nice but it does have a tendency to toast your one way bearing and if you use a fuel with alot of oil, the roto start can slip. It's only on the 5.9 that the roto start slips due to the engine design because the 4.6 in the x does not slip. I have ditched the roto start in favor of a pull start and I have yet to use the pull start.
The stock clutchbell is vented and if I'm not mistaken, its hardened steel as well.
Yep it is vented and hardened but I don't run the steel spur gear that came with the truck. I use a plastic one and the older Savage X double slipper clutch with the rubber drive cushion built into it.
If you have seen it run and know the guy pretty well I would say go for it. I'm not sure about your second question I run 20% nitro with 14% oil. It makes sense that the higher nitro content would run cooler but I have always run the 20%. The stock 5.9 pipe should be fine for an LRP .30 or .32.
The higher nitro % will typically run hotter and a less % nitro will run cooler. Everyone has thier own opinions but I prefer 20% Odonells and can consistently keep steady tunes with my trucks but than again your temp is typically relative to your tune. Too lean= to hot and to rich may = to cold
