thinking about getting one.. I'm a serious racer... what is a good competiton buggy i should get. what should i stay away from?

As a serious racer you should be telling us! :) I have heard the Mugen, Losi 8 and the Jammin are top picks.

Ditto what Elmer said. Kyosho and Xray are other two brands you should also consider. Most importantly look to see what is available at your LHS, if you're racing often you'll need local parts support.

I raced an Xray T2 this past season and did not have local parts support. It made it very tough to get spares and repairs in between weekends. There were many weeks where I had to pay overnight shipping just to be sure I had parts for race day. Those shipping costs can add up fast.

Any one of the brands mentioned will make good racers. Also remember that it's not just the brand, but the driver and set-up that wins races.

Very good point indeed by diesel, it has a lot to do with the driver. All these buggys are so close in performance it will probably end up which motor you buy that will make the biggest difference. Like diesel said which ever your local hobby shop supports most.

really alot depends on your budget. almost any quality buggy has great parts support, either locally or online.

how much you want to drop on your hobby.
300.00 plus monthly
600.00 plus monthly
1300.00 plus monthly

theres alot of differance between a 300.00 setup and a 1300.00 setup.
ofcourse 1300.00 would be new A shelf gear and trimmings.
buggy, motor, pipe, servos, radio, tire sets, starter box, batterys, chargers, fuel, plugs, ect.....

sometimes, a new player is Way farther ahead to go used at the begginning, until they are fully aware of whats all involved ect....

budget and overall use are the 2 main factors to be considered when jumping into a new thing.

I have a Losi 8T and I love it! THe issues with it are the throttle servo. Other than that is has been great. I am looking to get the Losi 8ight soon. Losi also has good customer service.:bandit:

Not to mention the RTR version is hard to beat. Most the other ones out there do not have an RTR version and you have to buy the engine and radio gear seperately. So if you are just starting, it is the best bang for the buck. Otherwise if you have the money buy the "race roller" version or "kit" verison and get a nice V-spec motor for it and that will be the $#^! LOL. You will be up in the $1500 range easy. Yes it is cheaper in the long run if you were to do all the upgrades the kit has, but only go by what you can afford at the time.

There are SOOOO many nice kits out there. Guess it really depends on your budget. What about all the equipment?I would not stress your budget with a super pricey buggy, and leave you no extra $$ for several sets of tires.Do you need a starter box? Mill and a good pipe? Hell $1300 is a drop in the bucket for a top tier race set-up.

OK, if I were to buy a race buggy right NOW, it would be between the Moogen and a Jammin FT. Maybe even a Hyper 8.5 if I was on a tighter budget.

+1 for these comments.....used and then custom build yourself one from rolling chassis.......you learn how to set up the car for you.....ultimately it does not matter what we think...what can YOU drive and maintain? That is the question, so to find the answer start used and build.

my 3 cents

Like psunitro said, $1300 is a drop in the bucket for a race setup. I prolly have that tied up in tires alone for my buggy. Plus spare parts I can prolly build another. Regardless of that, I think with a buggy, alot depends on your driving style, especially if you are thinking about the Losi 8ight. Nice buggy, but you can drive it strapped like say a Mugen. A Mugen almost rewards it's driver for pushing it hard and IMO, punishes for trying to drive it easy. The opposite holds true for the Losi, it rewards for smooth, finesse style driving where it really bucks back if you push it. IMO, the XB8 was a bit of the same, where you had to have some finesse but I also found the XB8 to almost be too adjustable. I run a MBX5R and love it, I consider myself to be a very aggressive driver and run it punched. I drove a friends Losi and found it didn't fit me at all. I know a few guys now running the RC8 and they compare it's drive to a Mugen though watching it, it just looks very twitchy but it's fast in the right hands. Kyosho makes a really nice buggy as well but they are kinda pricey compared to the others out there. Jammin with the new big bore shocks will prolly be a nice ride too. The X1 is a nice ride but there were a couple things I didn't care for with Jammin and one was that sometimes you had to buy a whole damn tree of parts to get one little rod end or something like that, you couldn't just by the damn rod end. The other was that the fit seemed to get a loose or sloppy after a short time and you couldn't get it really tight. All of them have their pros and cons. IMO, driver is about 60% of the game!
