Any NimH Batteries will work with it. If you are looking to go with a Lipo, you'll need the Stampede VXL.

6 to 8 cell NiMH packs or make the move to lipo.

You'll like the xl5 on nimh juice. I'd go a little bigger than 3600's if your budget permits. But if you get the vxl, you can start with nimh and when you feel your ready, you can jump right into lipo. 70mph is tempting right of the bat, but, believe me, 40's fast for a rc.
