When i try to start my savage 25 it makes really weird noises. It makes weird "pinging" noises and is reluctant to start. I have to keep the rotostart on and the glow plug starter in for atleast about a minute in order to get the thing started, once its started it works fine its just starting it thats the problem. Its not flooded i know that because it does it right off the bat everytime. It may be the glow plug although i changed it once and it was still doing it, the only thing i can think of is that maybe the new plug was bad.

The pinging noise might be one of two things. One is okay, but the other is definitely not good.

The okay...the pinging might be the gears working against each other if the the rotostart moves the shaft rapidly enough to engage the clutch shoes. Not likely, but again a possibility and nothing too harmful.

The bad...the pinging could be the sound of the piston head dinging against the bottom of the glo plug. Take the head off the engine and look at the piston surface. Does it look damaged? Are you using the right style glo-plug for your engine? If you are using plugs with an idle bar in an engine that does not require that, you are going to destroy the engine...and it will be hard as hell to get going as the glo plug needs to get particularly hot to get to the fuel past the idle bar.

I'm not sure whats wrong, I'm using the plug my lhs told me to use, but the noise wasn't happening untill after i changed the stock plug. The top of the piston doesn't look damaged however the botom of the coil where it is straight looks like it has been smashed and is flattend against the rim of the glow plug. I tried roto-starting it with not glow plug starter and it didnt make the noise so I'm not sure what to do. When the engine makes the noises it usually puts some resistance on the rotostance for like half a second.

Disconnect the fuel line, remove the glo plug, add a drop or two of after-run oil into the cylinder through the glo-plu hole...then apply the rotostart. Does the engine ping? If not, then you probably have the wrong plug.

What engine is this? Stock HPI NitroStar .25? Or some after market engine? Do you know what plug they gave you (brand and whether or not it is a standard or long plug)?

If your LHS is a HobbyTown USA, then chalk this one up to another bad bit of advice from someone employed in a field they know little about. In other words, consider this a lesson learned.

Its a stock nitro star .25, I'm using an OS A3 plug in it and yes...it was a hobby town. What plugs do the people here with nitrostar .25's use? I'm looking for a colder alternative plug because its summer here in AZ and its HOT.

the sad thing is most 3 yr old know more about r/c's than the people at hoby town do i bought my savage from there and have not been back there since

the Hobbytown in NH where i bought mine told me to use an OS A3 after break in so I bought 1 ... should I use it or not??

Sorry to be off topic but where in NH is the Hobbytown located? I've been desperately looking for a hobbystore close enough to me for it to be worth the drive.

ok thanks. As for the plug i don't see why not, as long as it doesn't have an idle bar.

I'd use an OS #8. The #3 is a hot plug. It may be causing pre detonation which could be causing your "pinging" sound. Normally on most 21 and larger engines, you want to run a medium to cold plug. I've never seen one that called for a hot plug. I run the OS #8 in my 21's and they work well. The #5 just ran crappy... too cold of a plug for me.

Make sure you have the shim/washer on the plug before installing it on the head. I have used A3 before and did not have any problems.
