I use it for my after run. I've heard that some engines may have o-rings that could be damaged by it though. For cleaning my engine I use brake cleaner. You have to pull the engine to do it. I don't think brake cleaner is good for certain plastics. I tried an auto degreaser once but it melted my header gasket.
 
Honestly I'm not sure where they would be. Weather it's on the piston or else where. It was when I first started researching the new hobby. Try checking with the manufacturer or hopefully a vet will chime in. I have a T-MAXX and they recommend WD-40 for after run. Sorry I couldn't be more help.
 
WD40 is fine. It does the job. ARO (after run oil) is nice because of it's viscosity, but if you have WD40 laying around and can't spare $6 to buy a bottle of ARO, it'll be just fine.

The only place there may be an o-ring in your nitro engine is in the carb and around the backplate. There are no o-rings around the piston.
