Edited due to dispute in thread
This thread has been edited by SkyMaxx. A bit of a screw-up on the original posters part turned this thread somewhere it should not have gone. All the extra stuff has been split and moved to the Free-For-All section. Feel free to continue that portion of the discussion there.

The original question that started this thread, as best as I can tell, is...

Is it okay to use WD-40 to clean my RC?

Beason's response is below

-SkyMaxx

should be ok as long as you didnt soak the electronics.. may leave a oil film that will atract more dirt though.. i use carb cleaner and a compressor

ok good. because i soaked EVERYTHING.

Bearings, bearings, bearings!!!!!!!
Make sure you have rubber sealed bearings if you are going to SOAK your RC with anything. WD 40 will eat the grease in your bearings leaving them dry. Water will mix with the grease causing failure and rust.

It may be fast and east to clean this way but it most definitely isn't the best way to do it. Detailed cleaning not only keeps your ride clean but as your using a toothbrush over every inch, gives you a chance to inspect every part for damage and wear. I will guarantee if you clean with a tooth brush rather then a garden hose you will not brake down as often.

true.....I do a bit of both...I tear off the mill and electrics....spray w/ DA and rinse lightly w/ a sink sprayer.....then go over every part when it's cleaned off and spray it w/ WD-40 for a slick look....but I do have rubber sealed bearings so I can do that w/ minimal risk......

I use a greaseless graphite / silicon spray. It will penetrate the plastic or graphite and dry without leaving a grease coating to attract the dirt.

ok i dont have rubber sealed bearings. i have 3-36 and it doesn't have water in it. can i spray it on the bearings since i screwed up wit wd-40??

I just take off the electronics and the mill and sprey it with simple green and the garden hose and when it is dry I use silicon spray it works a hell of a lot better then wd 40.

i use a steam cleaner for the fact that the quick evaporation helps keep water from building up in any un necessary places

I coat my car, electronics and all (without battery plugged in) with a half bottle of dilluted simple green. Not all at once but in sections, and then blast it clean with my air compressor before the mixture of dirt and simple green dries in place.

It doesn't look brand new in a few of the cracks and crevices, but it doesn't squeak or bind either. I am way too lazy to take my diff cases or electronics out of my car unless something is broken, or making horrible noises.

Have a link or are you using your Cappuccino machine?

I use brake cleaner for some of my clean up work. It dries fast and isn't as harsh as carb cleaner so not as likely to soften plastic parts. You can clean your metal shielded bearings with it, then soak them in a light weight oil bath for about 10 minutes or so and blow out the excess oil with a compressor.
