Are aluminum clutches considered an upgrade? What are the benefits to switching to them? I think they would last longer than the plastic ones that are in my car now. But is that the only reason?

It is an upgrade if it didn't already come with one. They will outlast most composite clutches in terms of durability. Composite clutches usually break before they can get worn down too much. So I guess in terms of wear, a composite clutch will last longer, but not without problems. A good aluminum 3-shoe should go 2-4 gallons, maybe more.

They run cooler, grab harder and more consistent than carbon shoes. Average lifespan is 2-3 gallons. About every gallon you need to remove the clutch shoes and sand the burs off the edges. The shoes mushroom from use. This will cause them to drag and possibly stick open.
The only time I like a carbon clutch is for racing with a strong .28 engine, they tend to smooth out the bottom end.
