Hi, I am seriously looking at putting a 2nd engine on my r34 3,

I am thinking of buying another 15fe engine from ebay or somewhere cheap and putting it symetrical on the opposite side of the chassis running onto the same drive sprocket, making it 2wd on the rear wheels and putting all the electrics and 2 fuel tanks up the front. I am not going to race or go very fast I just want a fun project that isn't too expensive with tyre shredding capabilities!

Any views and problems I would have?

Thanks

well then you should upgrade the differentials and dogbones for sure

Go for it! If you get it to work, maybe you can try for two big blocks. I'm all for fun projects like that. I thought about twin engine myself, the most difficult part I believe would be to make the two engines operate in sync. I think it will be very hard to get them to run together, make the same power, rev at the same speed. Getting it all to fit will be one thing, but tuning it will be key in getting it to be fast.

yeh thats what I thought to be a problem, getting them to run at exactly the same speed, Getting the servos in time would be easy, but if one engine is slightly different or the centrifugal clutches are kicking in at different times might put ome stress on one engine!

More thoughts

I think its a good idea, just not with those engines and you would probably want to keep the 4 wheel drive!

It's going to be an expensive project but that would be hella tight though. I mean people are out there doing a twin 21 Nitro Mt which is cool as hell but a twin RS4 I can honestly say I haven't seen that done like ever. Never know someone may have already had this idea.

i can't see it being amazingly expensive, another engine from ebay <£50 apart from strengthening what else is there? also I want a rear wheel drive monster:ahh:.

Has anyone put a 4-stroke in a 1/10 as I much prefer 4-stroke engines :cross:

It's got merit. No doubt that would be cool. I don't think you'd have as much problem with the engines as you think. You could invest in a tach to set the idle on both engines. Tune the needle the same and the differences should be marginal. Run both carbs off one servo. Just design a dual linkage. Just like they do on dual carb 1:1 cars. To make room you'll have to relocate the throttle servo and the battery. I'm sure you could modify the removable radio tray to still use the steering servo and rx box. I think you could still convert it and keep it 4WD. Maybe mount the steering servo where the fuel tank is. Use a flat rx battery. Maybe mount it on top of the front or rear diff. Or even on the front bumper between the body posts. I just don't know what to do with the fuel tank. Acutally, maybe you could mount the throttle servo in a ladown position near the roll bar. Just a few thoughts...

thankyou for the reply's, do you have anymore pics of that rs4 its mental!

Candyman, making space should not be much of a problem and I would use a dual throttle linkage running from 1 servo, It's going to be hard to set up the fueling as I will have to use 2 seperate fuel tanks and I am planning on having the exhaust going out the rear. I would want the rear wheel drive so he would do mental donuts and have some wheel spinning but it would only take 5mins to put the front drive shaft in to make it 4wd!

Please more replies !

Wow, that's wild! So how do two engines drive one transmission? I'm having a hard time imagining how that thing must run in a straight line... or even a crooked line!

Would simply one HUGE engine be better than trying to synch up two.. like maybe an airplane engine?

That's sweet looking though.. reminds me of that twin engined Hotwheels car I saw at SEMA a few years ago.

a airplane engine would not go as fast as a car engine

the airplane engines dont do but about 20000 rpm

nitro13,

If that's the case, twin engines would only be as fast as the max RPM of one engine. Do plane engines make a lot of torque? Either way, with that much power you'd have some really tall gearing to achieve a high top speed.

yeh this is just a fun project, tis true it will only go as fast as with one engine probs slower because of the weight, but their will be twice as much torque and twice as much power pushing the wheels round hopefully resulting in quicker acceleration and wheel spin! This is what I want to achieve!

to tell the truth just gte a big block and youll get your"wheel spinning action" quick acceleration you would have to have the carbs set purrfectely and it seems like the rs4 has no room for anything as wild as 2 engines as well as the tanks(yes i do have an rs4)

nitro13,

And that's on the high side. For a hot Quickie 500 pylon racer that's piped and burning 40%, sure, but most 2 stroke plane mills run in the 15K range, 4 strokes 10K. Reason being is the tip speed of the props. When ya get the tips up to the speed of sound, it gets extremely loud (prop noise).
