What are mfg's reffering to when they say turbo, "head," "button," and "crank?"

If I'm not mistaken "turbo" engines are those that are extremely hopped up versions of a regular motor. I know they make turbo heads that are made to fit a turbo plug which is shaped different to raise the efficiency of the air/fuel combustion increasing quite a bit of power. Turbo cranks are those that have been made with wider openings and a funnel shape in the large hole in the back. Some manufactures take a regular engine and make a turbo version. They would probably come with a different rod, crank, crank and a turbo plug setup I think. I'm still not to informed no this but I'm sure some of our other member will correct me if I'm wrong.
 
A turbo head is a head that accepts turbo plugs.
When you hear about a head button, the button is a part on the head. It's the part that if you were to take your head off and turn it upside down, it is the part that has the chrome look to it (the part that your glow plug screws into). Some engines actually have interchangeable buttons so you can either use a turbo plug or a standard plug.
I'm not sure about the difference in a turbo crank and a standard crank.

actually, wasteland, you are almost 100% correct. While a turbo engine isnt a hopped up regular engine, per say - the rest of what u say is pretty much spot on. The turbo plug has already been explained, and you are right about the turbo crank. Previously, most turbo motors - ecspecially small blocks - were top end engines with included more ports too, usually 5 instead of the normal three. this was done, as turbo plugs were illegal in racing, so these were outlaw engines to be used in the 235mm class. now - roar has made turbo plugs and cranks legal for all engines, but still limits ports to 3 + 1 exhaust port, so some engines are starting to show up as turbo models with only 3 ports. The new novamega SX12 SS Turbo is one example.

Well, Everyone is right (LOL) and good info from NitroAddict.

THe idea of a turbo head and plug is that it will add some top speed to your engine by adding a couple rpms. IME the do work but they aren't worth the price of admission generally @ around $7-8+ dollars a plug. I can usually smoke an identical engine running a turbo plug in the same car as my engine will usually be tuned better.

To each their own..
