I have a Savage SS with a stock motor & pipe. My question is this, in order to achieve accceptable eng temps at the end of a run 250-270. I wind up with spitting and sputtering eng for the 1/3 to 1/2 tank of fuel on a cold eng ine. Is this normal? If not whats my problem? I've been using Traxxas topfuel 20% and OS A3 glow plugs.

I'd suggest running a cooler plug. Like a OS #8. They make a 21 or larger perform better IMHO. I only use A3's in my 18 and used to use them in my 15.

Here's a link to OS's plug chart: OS Chart

Also, from all that I've read, using the stock tank for either the new or old savage is going to cause headaches. I had my stock tank on for a whole day... (6 tanks of running), then I installed a 125cc OFNA buggy tank. Much more consistent tuning.

Tnx olds97 lss, I'll try that colder plug 1st and keep that tank in mind.

The problem you are describing is common to most RCs with this pressure fed fuel system. One possibility is to find a tank that minimizes this (as mentioned by Olds) or the other is to tune it in such a fashion as to minimize the issue.

How do I tune this out, you ask? You start by tuning the engine when the fuel level is already at the half tank mark. When you tune it to perform its best at that level, then it will be slightly richer when full and slightly leaner when near empty. You will still have the leaning tendancy, but it will be mitigated by the tuning. You might want to give it a try while waiting for a new tank.
