I want to remove the trans. to see if the guy I bought my Tmaxx from has put a FOC in it. Anyway, what do I have to do to get to that transmission? I don't want to tear the whole thing down but I would like to remove it and check it out. Any tips on doing this? I can't get ahold of the dude who sold it to me and the truck isn't running right now.:ponder2:
Also, I should check it out before I run it. So, do I just put grease in it once it's cleaned?

if you just want to find out if it has FOC...roll the chassis on the floor...if the spur gear spins you have FOC.....also there wouldn't be a 3rd servo.....it wouldn't have the lil shaft coming from the tranny case that it connected to......
to pull the tranny:
there's the 8 screws going in from the bottom through the chassis brace....the 4 corner screws also hold the chassis brace in place....remove those screws, detach the F/R linkage from the servo horn and the brake linkage (I just remove the set screw inthe top and let the arm dangle...mark where it was in the post it went through before taking it off) then it should pull right out....if you have stock slider shafts they'll separate....if you have CVDs they just stay w/ the Tranny.......once that's out you can take the spur gear and brake disc off....then the screws all around the case come off...careful w/ these...the strip easily...I changed mine to all 3mm machine thread screws while the case is still fairly new......when you crack the case...have the exploded view from the traxx-ass site handy......you'll drop small lil peices and want to know what they do......good luck....take pics as you do it if you're not sure you can get it back together.....that's a Eddy tip

If it has the FOC in it, when you turn the spur gear counter clockwise it will try to move.(looking at it with the rear end towards you) If it doesn't it'll spin freely either way you turn it.

Thanks you two. Good thing I asked because it's a lot less work to roll it on the floor. Not that I don't want to take it apart but....for now, I'll just try that. I have to get the digital powered up first. That is a good tip, Plaid. I find that the LHS are not carrying as many parts for the Tmaxx now. I know I can get them from lots of places but it is more inconvenient. I had one guy at the HS who told me not to bother. It's almost like he thinks the Tmaxx is useless now. Well, I like my tmaxx and I'm not getting rid of it. It has aluminum bulkhead, aluminun front and rear skidplates and an RPm skidplate underneath it. I only paid 250. for it, so I'm going to do some hopups regardless of what the dude says.

Maybe it is just your LHS or problems getting parts in Canada. Lots of Maxx parts floating around down here. Maxx will be here awhile as they still sell them new and really flooded the market to begin with. And then there all the derivative versions, E-Maxx, S-Maxx, etc.

The trans itself is not that scary to work on. While my wife was breaking in her T she hit reverse by accident so I had to order parts fromTraxxas and put them in. Not a big job, really. That was my first crack at a major repair to an R/C as well. It is actually a bit harder getting it back in as you have to line up the driveshafts carefully to get it all on.

Maybe I should go play then. I need to get some balls (not literally) and just dive in. I'm gonna find that camera first, cause I know I'll forget what screws go in where and I'll forget what order the parts go on....wish me luck. I know where you live if I need help! LOL

Hugo, (what IS your first name, anyhow?), what I do is pull out a light colored work towel and as I disassemble I lay the screws out in the pattern I took them out. So, as you take out the 8 screws from the trans, you will lay them out at the front of the towle right in front of you, in basically the same pattern as they were when they were installed on the truck. I do this for all assemblies and it usually has good results. It is good practice with any work you do on the truck as when you are racing, you don't have time for pics in the pits.

Thanks Revo. My name is Kelly. I should just change my username because I do cause some confusion with the guys. Good tip, I'll definitely do that.

DEFINATELY do that.....^^^^....get your self a lil area you can leave it layed out like that for at least a few days...you may need it......a box top from filing boxes w/ a towel tucked in it works great for a temporary work surface......What kind of hop ups are you looking to do? I'm selling a serious ammount of T-maxx goodies.....and it's all in perfect shape......save some serious coin on some of the stuff.....

Plaid, I'm out of cash right now and probably for a long time, since I just bought an RC18T. Which of course, is right after I bought the Savage LE. I just want to do the FOC for now if it's not done.
Thanks for the offer. If cash comes my way I'll definitely hunt you down. Thanks so much. Actually, maybe I'll keep my username. Sometimes it's funny to see responses from the guys who don't know. I know, I'm easily amused.
Gotta do something to have fun!

You know, a manual works really well also! They have exploded parts views that show you where things are supposed to go. When I wrench, I just group the parts and throw them into a cup or something.

Just an idea...

Yep, that's right, you did say your name is Kelly. Forgot about that. Hugo is your dog, I remember that.

MW is right. I forgot about that. I think, though, that K is missing her manual. Kelly, did you try to download one from Traxxas or Eddy' site?

Monkey see, monkey do. I'll get the manual thru FastEddy's site cause my silly brother accidentally grabbed my manual when grabbing his mags. So, I'm waiting for him to bring that back. I love him so I don't care. Good excuse to see him again! I forgot all about doing that. Not the smartest r/c'er in the dirt!:loser:

OH believe me there are people who are much worse than you are......MUCH WORSE....I keep a few of those cheapo 99 cent plastic divider bins for small parts as well....outdoor world has em cheap.....get some loc-tite (blue) as well...when you rebuild stuff you want to loc-tite the screws....save lots of headeaches down the road......also try and get a good hobby grade set of tools when you can....they cost a lil more but the allen keys are a must.....when you get those look into getting a screw set too.....another small upgrade but well worth it...I hate using philips screws...they just strip out too easy...unless they're Stainless steel.....see we'll have you doin dip, drinkin beer, spitting, lookin at girly mags and sayin vulgar stuff to total strangers in no time...LOL

Actually, I bought the tools (and perty ones too) before I even had a vehicle. Also, I bought a complete set of screws for the Tmaxx right off the bat as well. Kinda funny to do that first but at least I have everything now. I think I'll go get one of those bin things too. They're nice and small. It's not like the screws and stuff are large.
Yeah!!! beer, spitting, smoking pot and cursing!! Woohoo! Wait I already do that stuff. Not the spitting.
Thanks for the tips.:spit: :burp: :thefinger :trashed:  :smoke:

Ditto!!

This worked wonders with me on fixing my friends Tmaxx. The only thing I lost was the body clips :ponder2: Just make sure you can leave it in a safe place untouched for a week....that is unless you got a LHS real close who stocks everything you need. If you do, you're lucky because it's a week wait on 50% or more of the stuff I need or want. Anyways, best of luck and let us know how this goes. It should be a great project to cut your teeth on. I just wished I was there to watch since my Revo already came converted.

Well, the spur gear didn't move when I pushed it forward. Oh well. Then I had another thought (I know, scary!), maybe since the truck is used, I should concentrate on what maintenance should be done. Now, I'm sure some of you boys must have bought a used truck at some point. What would you rec. I check out? Would you take the diffs apart or the shocks or....? I just want to make sure it's all taken care of.:ponder2:

on the maxx. the drive shafts are weak. check for twisting. also check the bulkheads and arms for cracks, the engine mount is weak so check that to. make sure all the bearings are good. you should be able to see if the shocks are leaking. may want to replace fuel lines just to be safe. and clean fuel filter if it has one

Thanks Beason. There is no in line fuel filter, I'll have to get that. My new Savage LE doesn't have one either or a failsafe. Ya...I know. I gotta get both those things for the Savage. Thanks again.

Anytime I've bought a used rig, I take that mother clean apart, I mean everything! Diffs, tranny, bulks, shocks, EVERYTHING! I get two primary things out of it:

1. I now know exactly how the truck goes together.
2. I can replace/upgrade parts as I clean and reassemble.

It has nothing to do as to whether or not I trust who I bought the rig from and everything to do to avoid any headaches 15 minutes after I get it running! Truth is, sometimes there is damage you won't see until you break it down! I tore my Revo down earlier this winter to clean and add some upgrades. Turns out, every servo case (every stinkin' one of 'em) was cracked and I had a cracked rear axle carrier that I hadn't noticed because it was on the back.

One time, I bought a T-Maxx from my brother (and hell, I knew more about that rig than he did) and I STILL tore it down!

Best way to learn about that truck is to break it down, clean/replace/upgrade parts as you reassemble it. Whether or not you think it needs it, it needs it!

Good luck!
