:\ Hi could some one help!! Have savage x 4.9,(new) have run three tanks through, on a rich setting, however when i gradually go leaner whilst making adjustment to the idle,it seems to sound very raspy at low throttle and when i accelerate it stalls..is it too rich still..even when i lean off a little seems to do the same...good amount of smoke on acceleration also. Have not played with slow speed setting as manual recommended not too.fuel is fresh.
thankyou

When it is sitting still and idling is it spewing fuel out of the exhaust ? When you gas it does it spew even more ? Is it leaving a trail of fuel on the ground for about a foot when you gas it ? If so , then it is still a little to ritch . You want some fuel spewing out but not a puddle .

Go ahead and lean the LSN setting, it's time. Lean it until the truck idles good but the idle speed drops after 5 seconds of sitting still. Then finish tuning the HSN to your driving conditions.

tunning problems savage

Thanks for your thought's, will try LSN Idea, yes there is a puddle of castor oil where i keep tarting it, tried HPI tunning vid on you tube, the guy that wears blue gloves...the problem i still have is that it wont rev from stand still to full throttle cleanly, when i get it right on the hsn needle then go to lsn...1/8 turn it seems always to hesitate and even stall out....arn't these thing supposed to wheel stand occasionally...seems always bogged down..:\

At 3 tanks, you shouldn't be hitting WOT (wide open throttle) yet. I rarely hit WOT before I get 5-6 tanks through an engine. Around the 7-8 tank mark, I start tuning it for performance a bit, but I'm usually easy on it until at least 11-12 tanks. Then I begin leaning out for good performance.

You more than likely won't see good power out of the engine until you get 5-6 tanks through it. Then it will start loosening up and running better.

I spend tanks 2-8 just getting the temps up to and over 200F and keep it below 240F. The goal of "break-in" is to allow the parts in the engine to wear together, gently and to temper the components with heat. I adjust tune to get the temp up to 200F and I just gently ease on the throttle and ease off the throttle up to 1/2-3/4 throttle pretty much up to tank 8. Then I begin doing quick WOT runs, but still gently, I don't just peg the throttle off the line. Between each tank, put the piston at the bottom of the stroke and let it cool down to at least 80F before firing it up again. This will help temper/break-in the components.

My methods may be a bit gentle, but I like to make my engines think I care ;)

Then I kick them in the teeth when I meet up with my buddies for a bash session!

Tunning probs

:\ Sure, and i agree fully..with WOT, never used full throttle till today but occasionally only, by which time it would have been at least 5 very full tanks worth gone through, and it seems to be on a rich setting also because of blue smoke. This is what i am doing, have done this a few times.with the same prob occuring. Reset low speed to factory flush setting as well as high speed needle, start warm up buggy few large laps and gradually turn high speed needle clock wise 1/8 and go again...lots of smoke..stop.. another 1/8 turn...go again.. again smoke ...stop and again 1/8 turn.at this time it seems smooth with acceleration...when i tried again it would hesitate so i would go back 1/8 turn...ok.But then when i would turn the Low speed needle in 1/8 turn i would be getting problems with it stalling under throttle bursts.Yet there is always a good amount of blue smoke..i just can't seem to get it to accelerate smooth and clean. any help much appreciated. is it wise to start with low speed needle first and finish with Hsn....thankyou :\

where are you. i dont think it may affect break in, but how cold is it. i couldnt get my maxx to run worth crap. then a little aluminum foil at the top of the head kept the heat in and she ran like hell.

running prob

am in the Adelaide hills, which is in the state of south Australia...temp has been around mid twenties....had better success today..but when quick throttle is applied it always hesitates...tried going either way 1/8 turn on the low speed needle..nothing changed...and also with the high speed needle..very frustrating....mm:\

oh...aren't these 4.6 savages supposed to wheel stand occasionally when they are tuned correctly as per youtube vids....???

I'm with 'durwank', he's the man to ask !......but I wouldn't start with the LSN & then tune the HSN, I would always start with the HSN & then tune the LSN.
