Traxxas Top Fuel and TRX 2.5 troubles

so i ran some Blue Thunder 20% through the 2.5 and it runs a lil better but its still being a bit of a pain in the ass when it comes to tuning. the idle is a bit high and when i turn it down a lil it wants to shut down when i hit the brakes and when i try to stop it idles high and then it slows down a lil. i know thats cause its a lil lean when it runs at high speed and then it stops. i tried to richin it and it helped a little but it started running like crap. i never had this much trouble with the .15 i had in the truck. i dont know what the deal is with these motors

Why dont you reset the carb to factory settings and see if it makes any difference...it might make it easier for ya.:2cents:

i have reset it but its still havin some issues. it seems ok right now but I'm not sure

it will take a tank or two to get most of the old fluid lingering around in there sometimes.. expecially where there is somuch oil....

Byron's fuel and a good hot plug should make that 2.5 purrrrr. If not then you probably have an air leak or worn engine. Don't be afraid to turn the idle down a little too.

if you want to do it right you can tear the motor down and clean it right out and then seal it and make sure all lines are good and you could always blow lines out and clean the tank.... but you dont NEED to do all this but it is what I am going to do when all my top fuel is gone.... you could never be to safe.....

I know I'm sick and tired of tuning my truck on this crappy fuel. Think I"m gonna give the rest to my son and make the switch to ODonnells or similar. I've resealed my 3.3 twice thinking I'd goofed the first time. Now I firmly believe it is my fuel. Manufacturer just wants us to buy their fuel cuz they we know we seldom buy factory replacement parts.

Have you sealed the engine yet? If not i would start there, go back to factory settings on the needles, make sure your idle speed is right and then start it again.

I'm gonna do whatever i can to get this thing running right. i wanna start racing it but if it keeps this up i might as well go back to the .15 cause it never gave me this much trouble. i ran the traxxas crap through that and it ran pretty nice, held a tune without much problem... guess i got lucky on that one. but i know that the 2.5 is a different story. I've always had trouble with these engines and at this point ill do whatever i can to get it to run good

i buy a few factory replacement but i do see what you are sayin granjer.. And that is pretty messed up becasue if they axually thought about it, And made a quality fuel that was axually better and it did make the motor last longer they would sell a hole lot more........... And there would be more people buying their products but somepeople have so many problems with their rigs (and most of it is from the fuel) that they start going to different companies and turn that 1st rig into either a shelf queen or sold to someone and all they do is clean it out and run better fuel and you end up kicken your own a## about it because you see it run perfect...... I was wondering I haven't really looked yet so I figyred I would ask while I was thinking about it.... Heavier duty connecting rods and piston&sleeve sets.... Is there a company that would sell anything like this for the 3.3 and the 2.5????? Thanks ahead of time and good luck granjer.... what fuel are you thinking you are gonna switch to???? I tried trinity monster horsepower before traxxas and read the manual and it said to use top fuel for best results and hahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha thats how they make their money right there..... Because when anyone starts a hobby you try to follow the instructions pretty close to the letter to keep it fun instead of guessing and ruening parts on your first run or use the wrong fuel for the break in... I think with every rc that is sold should have this website on a card and in the package of stuff that comes with it...... Or have the lhs recomend this forum to everyone...... That would save alot of headache's and belly aches...

I was thinking about Odonnels or another "pink/orange" fuel my lhs sells. (name escapes me at the moment) I"ll let ya know this weekend how it goes. I'm gonna pick up a quart tomorrow along with my servos and one way clutch. Which by the way, my lhs says traxxas top oil/fuel is mostly responsible for my one way bearing failure on my sons .15pro. Sumptin to think about. As far as the HD con rod and piston, think about the additional rotating mass the crank will have to overcome, and the flywheel. It might not be worth the extra stress you'll put on the engine. Just my $.02 there. Cheers.

Switched to Sidewinder race fuel 20%/10%. All I can say is"IT IDLES NOW" runs a lot better too:D

I've used nothing but sidewinder 20% with an o'donnel red plug in my 3.3 and it works great! it holds a tune really well :D I've put

They don't have Odonells, I don't know where I got that from. They have Byrons Race Gen 2. Well the traxxas fuel is like $35 a gallon and the bryons race gen 2 is about $27.00. Almost $9 cheaper. I have been using traxxas top fuel because that is what they said to run for best performance and longest engine life in the book. Basically they said we developed the engines and after testing came up with the best fuel for longest tune and engine life. I know they want you to keep spending money with them on their fuel. Is Byrons Race Gen 2 good stuff. Will I harm my engines by changing from top fuel to race gen 2 after running over a gallon of top fuel through my nitros.

^^ That's the second best fuel around IMO. If you can get it, run it. Drop the donkey piss Traxxas garbage and start running Byron's ASAP.

just switched to byrons yesterday. Ran about one full fuel filler bottle of byrons through my stampede and jato. It would seem as if they have a little more power but I did have to richen the mixture out almost a half turn on the hsn as the temps were getting around 270. So it seems like you get more performance out of the fuel but less cooling. I guess if traxxas does run a lot of oil in their fuel than most other companies that would explain why the temps went up.

"Donkey piss Traxxas garbage", somebody doesn't like Top Fuel! Lol. It's ok, I don't either. It runs fine in my sons .15 pro, but not my 3.3.
