Haha , accurate!
You just have to explain to her about boys. If we aren't working on something, we're not ourselves. And working on RC cars will teach your son so much. And the memories you create will last forever. It's not just boys playing with toys 😉

That’s a great sales pitch (and it’s all true). I’ll be sure to use that tonight over dinner 👍

I am not exaggerating when I say I still very strongly remember the smell of balsa wood, two part epoxy, and nitro fuel from 1980 when my dad built his first RC airplane. Had my dad taken more of an interest in my obsession with RC cars, I know I'd have some good memories there to draw from. But all of my happy memories of my dad involve us working on something. Even though it was more me watching him, they are times I won't ever forget.

That’s good stuff. That’s what I want with me and my lad. I also have a 9 year old boy but his main obsession is PlayStauon5. Lucky for him, video games are one of my hobbies too. But I’m still trying to lure him into the world of RC. I keep showing him different trucks and I said that if he’s interested, I’d be happy to get him something so we can all drive together.

It's hard to break through that attachment to the game consoles. I only tolerate my son playing his games because he plays on a PC, and the boy knows just about as much about computers now as I do. And his Oculus, well that thing is like the best workout system I have ever seen. When he's done playing, he's ready for a change of clothes and a shower from sweating so much.

But when he sees you and your other son living it up, he'll likely get onboard.

Haha my son has Oculus as well. And you’re right , it’s like a home gym. But he always goes back to PS5. I may get him an RC anyway and tell him it’s here whenever he wants to give it a try.

Get him a little FPV drone that comes with the goggles. Emax makes some decent ones that you can even fly indoors. Or get him a camera drone. Then he can fly around filming you guys.

I was looking at some radios (transmitters) and those things can get really expensive for the fancy ones. I was surprised. I saw some Futaba’s over $1k. They look so nice though.

Is it common practice to upgrade the radio on a RTR for bashing or is that just a racer thing?
The only good thing about having a few cars with rtr set ups is for when you have friends who want to run your cars with you.

If she was brushless, I'll bet she could pull out of that dive! 🤣

After many years , I’m back looking at RC rigs again due to my son showing an interest in it. I’m gonna get one for him and one for myself. I’ve been looking at Traxxas. They seem to have a lot of good bashing trucks.

So far , I like the Rustler 4x4 Ultimate and the Maxx. Do these seem like solid picks? What else should I be considering?
I believe Traxxas Rustler is a great first choice as this was my first. Get some extra front and back drive shafts and RPM A-Arms if you bash a little and a spare Spur gear right away esp if you change pinion ratio. Traxxas are typically easy to work on and the parts are readily available and inexpensive. I also own the Maxx, Hoss, Sledge, Xmaxx, Revo and Slayer Nitro. Typically I have larger rocks in my area, so the clearance is a factor for off-road is crucial. Hoss and Xmaxx do well here.
