can anybody tell me if you can change a savage x transmisson from two speed to a singal speed
 
because my truck does not like shifting back into first gear and with the picco .28 i do not need the gear and it likes bogging out in 2nd gear
 
I would be surprised if you can find a set of clutch shoes that could stand starting in second for too long with a savage... unless your geared low. If that's the case, gear it taller and get some use out of that first gear.

I'm not sure how you would lock it in 2nd, but you could just adjust the shift point to be so low that it's almost instantly shifting into second.
 
its tuned now but i broke teeth right off the super gear like i said i am haveing problems shifting
 
Install a new spur and slipper pad and a new locknut that puts the tension on the spring for the slipper. Tighten it all the way until the spring is fully compressed. Don't over do it or you'll warp the spur and it will burn up anyways. Next you need to set your gear mesh tighter or your clutch is overheating the clutchbell causing it to melt the spur. No a metal spur is not the answer.
Clean the CB good, grease flings out of your new clutch bell bearings and goes all over the clutch shoes and clutch bell. This causes slipping/heat..... you get the picture.
I recommend an aluminum clutch with a .9 spring, this combo will run nice and cool, preventing the melting issue.
Big power engines are not as forgiving on gearmesh. As long as I was close to a good mesh, my NS-25 would not strip the spurs. Once I stepped up yo a stronger engine I figured out I had to set the mesh as tight as possible but still be able to spin the spur easily for at least 3/4's a rotation. One little tight spot in the mesh is no big deal with a plastic spur. It will wear in and be perfect. Follow this advice and your spurs will last longer than your dogbones. Which you better stock up on, the Picco will snap them like twigs.
After you solve these issues and get a good tune, your shifting will be more consistent.
I recommend 17/47 gearing and you'll need to tighten the two speed shift point a good 1/2 turn or so depending on what you where running beforehand.

STAY AWAY FROM THAT POS. It is way too much aggravation for a Savage. Been there.Adjustable clutches are a pain to get to on a Savage, you have to pull the engine evrytime you need to adjust it. It took me forever to set it and it ran hotter than the stock clutch. It also takes a special deep clutchbell.
Believe it or not Integy makes a decent clutch for the Savage that is very affordable.
Browse E-Bay and towerhobbies for a clutch. plenty of options.
 
what clutch been would i need to fit on that werks 4 shoe clutch
 
An Ofna Vented, not the narrow version. Just remember I warned you.
If you plan to spend that much on a clutch I highly recommend you go to www.M2cracing.com and order his universal 4 shoe clutch with medium shoes. His clutch shoes & springs install so easy I can put them on with my fingers. It is the best 1/8th offroad clutch on the market.
If you buy the Werks you are going to run into all kinds of fitment issues.
There is a reason why the Werks clutch has been collecting dust for YEARS at my LHS.
 
alright because i just found out today is that i am making all my clutchs slip and someone told me to go to a carbon clutch
 
Carbon is good setup properly, but they will melt if you run it really hard in grass or hill climbing. A good al. clutch is the most dependable way to go for bashing.
I have overheated a carbon clutch doing powerslides, I ended up with a spur just like the one in the other thread about spurs with just 2 or 3 teeth melted off while the truck was idling..
I have taken temp readings of various clutches.
Carbon clutches operate anywhere from 130F-180F, guess what happens at 180F.
Al. clutches hardly ever get over 140F if they are set up properly. your bearings and everything else clutch related will last longer running cooler.
 
Scrogg is right on the money.
I also tried the Werks adjustable clutch and it was a royal pain. Once you go with the aluminum clutch shoes you'll have peace of mind with that part of the equation.

One additional thought concerning it not wanting to shift back into first. Have you torn apart the transmission and looked at the clutch holder set?
Example part numbers 86368 or 86091.

There's an arm on this piece that swings out under centrifugal force that in effect engages 2nd. The end of this arm takes quite a beating and it can become flared out to the point where it can't seat itself back inside the clutch holder - and you're stuck in 2nd. You can file off the rough edges or replace the set. It's happened to me...
 
Good point bud, I assumed his tranny was shifting into second so quick he was not noticing it. It could be a bent shifter pawl, I have bent one or two in my day.
 
well we took the transmission apart and their is nothing wrong with it so we are going to try a 4 shoe clutch from ofna and i am going to make the spur gear tight so that i will just make it a derect drive because i am going to screw it to the other peices because i can not keep a slipper clutch for more then a half a tank and then its already shot

how can i tell if its stuck in second when i take it apart but i dont think it is because it acts like it goes into no gear and then slams itself back into first gear which thats another reason why i think i am breaking stuff fast
 
Go to E-Bay, buy a new tranny for 20 bucks or so plus a new slpper assembly for roughly another 10 bucks. Bolting the spur to the hub is going to ruin much more expensive parts, posibbly the engine crankshaft.
I burned up 10 spurs with my first Savage until I finally figured out that the metal slipper plate was warped and glazed over AND the locknut was backing off as soon I started to drive the truck. Just like you, no more than half a tank of fuel the slipper/spur would melt.
The in and out of gear sound you are hearing is a combination of the slipper engaging/disengaging and your engine tune is off. Just my guess from here......
 
alright but i got that stuff all new and this is my 4 time driving it sence i have change it all to brand new stuff
