On my new (to me, it's realy used) T-maxx, I received it form the seller with the linkage from the gear shift servo not hooked up to anything. I can't make out hardly anything with the diagrams, but it looks as though it's supposed to connect to the transmission through a hole on the side closest to that servo. Instead, there is a rather large screw in that hole, and the linkage is just flopping about.

I'm gonna attach two pictures that kinda show what I'm talking about. Sorry for the bad quality, they were with my cell. I plan to take some better ones with a real camera first thing in the morning.

So am I just missing something? Is the ability to shift disabled for some reason, and if so, why? Does this mean there was a problem with shifting, or could it just be that someone wanted it disabled, and reenabling it is as simple as replacing a part. I've looked, but haven't found much info on this. (And as you can tell, I don't know how this part of the car works very well yet)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How can I check for this/change it back? I want reverse.

Or is there a good reason to not have it?

By the looks of it, you do have the FOC in the trans. That is the reverse servo and linkage, I have the FOC in mine, and the kit includes the screw that you are showing to plug the hole in the trans.

I thought that I would want reverse at first, but soon realized that it was more of a hassle than it was worth. My tmaxx would lurch forward constantly when sitting at idle, sometimes it would not engage the reverse gear when I flicked the switch and would result in it being stuck in reverse gear for awhile until I drove it in circles in reverse and flicking the switch back and forth to try to get it to reengage the forward gear....that was a big pain in the A$$!! Not to mention that it seemed to me that it was kind of sluggish at take off.

Also, the amount that the reverse gears weigh is quite a bit. By removing them, you gain better acceleration at take off....better/more wheelies! To be honest, you should see if you can get by without it. See if you run into alot of situations where you would need it, and if you do, consider it then.

Just my opinion, but if you really want reverse, you will have to track down all of the gears and the shaft that was taken out when doing the conversion. Remove the trans and remove all of the FOC parts and reinstall the forward/reverse output shaft assembly and the shift fork assembly. Do you have all of the old gears in a ziplok bag or something??

If you are going to keep the FOC, you should remove the servo that has the linkage dangling from it, its just adding weight.

You'll be happier with the FOC, the black maxx trany bucks horribly when reverse is installed.

yeah mine just started to lurch forward it used to run great.. but it started yesteday... but it is still running every other way real good.. I thought I wanted it at first but you just goose it real quick and you are facing the opposite way... I havent even shifted the tanny into reverse in quite a while...

Holy crap, that looks complicated. I think I will leave it for now, both to try it out and see if I think I will need it, as theant said, and because I just really don't want to mess with that yet. Maybe someday.

I don't think I have all of the parts anyways. I'll just take out that servo the guy left there (for some reason) and play with it for a while to see how I like it. Now that I think about it, I probably won't end up needing it that much anyways. Thanks for the advice guys. You've all saved me yet again

the tranny is alot easier then it looks like trust me.. I thought the same thing when I first opend up the black tranny!!! as I started into it i realized it isnot as intimedating as it looks... just make sure you have your exploided veiw right handy because acouple of the gears look pretty close to each other if it still has reverse in it.... if it was converted to foc then there will be alot less gears...

Thats good about the less gears...I like the foc already!

If there is one thing I have learned from any project/hobby, it's always have the exploded views permanently within reach. (In this case, also the parts list)... lol

yup that helps I put mine in clear sleeves in a couple binders.. I started out with one big binder and now I have 3 binders full!!! the clear sleeves for a binder works great because you wont ever stain the paper!!! and I know my hands get dirty when I play with the toys!!

I swapped my sons to an forward only. If you want the parts I took out you can have them for free. Pm me your address and ill mail ya what I took out. I like the forward only much better, no lurching as stated above.

I stopped by my LHS with my car and the parts that I got, where the owner actually pointed out to me that I do already have all the parts needed to put reverse back in, but, like you guys, he recommended that I didn't. Or at least, see if I could live without it first. Since I don't really want to mess with that many gears yet (slow and steady :\) I think I will take that advice. Plus, once I put some thought into it, I realized that I probably wouldn't end up using reverse anyways. No lurching could be a plus, too.

But I do have the parts, they were in a zip lock bag near the bottom of one of the parts boxes. Thanks for the offer though, I do appreciate it :)

Yeah, the trans looks really intimidating, it did to me at first also. But once you get into it with the exploded diagrams in hand, its a piece of cake. Take a look at some vids on youtube on the tmaxx lurching problem.....you wont miss it, trust us.

That is if you can find some vids!!!lol Sorry about that, I could have sworn that I have watched vids on this before, I looked and couldnt find any.

Anyways, try to find vids on FOC instead.
