Hey me and a friend were bashing and after a bunhc of jumps i decided to take one last and when i did i stripped my spur gear. but thats not the problem. I now need a new spur gear. I have herd that on a stock motor you should never put a metal spur gear on. is that true or should i get a metal one. also if i dont need a metal one do you think i could call traxxas and they could give me one( for free maybe ).

I doubt they would give you one for free. Metal isn't necessary. If you do get a metal one, you have to buy a hardened clutch bell as well or the metal spur will just chew up and spit out the stock one.

I ran kimbrough spurs with my maxx. They seemed to last longer.

You also might want to inspect your engine mount. You may have cracked it. If you did crack it and you can afford it, the new era mount is a really good one. The stock one is brittle and they break pretty easy.

Dude if u are a basher dont get a metal spur.
the thing is the chassis flexes with every movment and if u go off a good size jump with metal gears they wouldnt break but u could cause some major damage to the tranny gears or the out drives it is always good to have a weak link in your drive train and the spur is a good one. plastic spurs are very cheap and if u chew one it isnt a big deal

olds i checked and there was no problem. And tarant thanks i am going to order a couple online just in case it happens again and thanks i like that idea of keeping with the plastic spur with the wek link thing.

hey I'm Gadawgs friend and he was bashing with me. the jump was about 4 feet and i broke a shock. just thought id tell u

ok today i was out dring my T-Maxx again with the new spur gear and all of a sudden i hear that high pitched noise that you here when a spur strips. YES!!! it did it again, I'm pissed thats two Spurs in one week. what is it that makes my truck strip gears like this? should i bring it to the hobby store and get it fixed? thanks for all your help

I think your mesh was off. With the mesh being off, it can chew up spurs all the time. And, if the engine moves at all, it will throw the mesh off between the gears.

how do i fix that? or should i just go to the hobby store and have them fix it?

Have you ever taken your transmission off? Have you checked the tightness of the 8 screws holding the transmission on?

They have a tendency to work themselves loose over time and you have to check them periodically. All it takes a 1mm here, 1mm there and your spur gets toasted.

Also, is your clutchbell teeth sharp and pointy or do they still have square ends on the teeth?

loosen the 4 screws that hold the engine mount and then u can adjust the mesh

Dont depend on the hobby shop when something goes wrong... they will do anything for money. People have ways of doing mesh. It is really really easy when you get the hang of it. I can't explain it so that it is understandable, so you will have to wait for someone else to help.

Most likely, the motor pinion and spur gear gear mesh is set improperly. When you mate the pinion and spur together, there should be a very slight gap between the two sets of teeth. To set the gear mesh, cut a narrow strip of notebook paper and run it into the gear mesh. Loosen the motor screws and slide the motor and pinion gear into the spur gear. Re-tighten the motor screws and then remove the strip of paper. You should be able to run a fresh strip of paper through the gears without binding them. If you have a larger gap than described here, you can easily strip out your spur gear.

I got this from traxxas's web site
