My MGT revs up like it's spinning freely alot then catches into gear and goes but it slips in and out alot, anybody have any ideas what I should look for first before I crack the tranny open?

Start from the beginning of the drive train and check the CB. Might have a bad spring or broken shoe. If that checks out, go to the next step.
Sounds like the clutch isn't hitting. Like Rolex said, check the clutch bell, clutch shoes and springs to see if something is binding or broken.
