...I need to change the top shock caps. They should be here any day now. The problem ? I've never done it before ... so how is it done?

Just keep them upright when unscrewing the old shock caps, there should be a little rubber bladder inside the shock cap, you will need to transfer this to the new shock caps, here is what it looks like, http://www.traxxas.com/support/kb_search.php?action=artikel&cat=34&id=183 you will also want to fill any of your shocks that are low on shock oil to just about 2 - 3mm from the top so there is room for the bladder, but if you really want to save your self a lot of head aches go buy a set of Traxxas aluminum big bore shocks like these http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXSP65

Stock Maxx shocks are notoriously weak, and you will continue to have problems with them. Your best bet would be to upgrade to a decent aftermarket set of aluminum shocks. Just avoid Integy shocks, or anything else Integy for that matter.
 
For the time, I'll stick with the stock shocks. When I wreck this truck again ... then I will invest in better shocks. I've spent alot of money on this wreck. lol
 
the caps will prob. be a pain to get off w/ the springs on there-if there really tight-which they should be. just slide the spring down and use some pliers that have that space between the middle. ya dont have to sqeeze that hard so that should make it alil easier. anybody know which model ofna/kyosho 1/8 scale truggy or 4wd buggy shocks fit the maxx-most likely 8 rear shocks w/ those lil booties on the shaft(not the spring), they look pretty sweet and cheap prices on ebay. thanks
 
I used to have that problem all the time till I got the big bore set-up. Also had them strip the threads and loose all the oil.
 
it helps to put the pipe tape white stuff on the caps and also a little fuel line in the rod thing so it dont smash into the shock and bust it

1/8 buggy shocks are too long unless you can find a set of unlimited engineering supermaxx shocks. Even those are a hair too long, but they are longer than 1/8 buggy front and shorter than 1/8 buggy rear.

YOur best bet is just to go with traxxas big bores with some stiffer springs:
