I am trying to help my neighbor with his motor. Seems that his motor jumps to 300+ temps after running a few laps in his CRT. I told him I would go ahead and check his engine out. I took it apart to find that the previous owner put in NON-Turbo button on the engine. Stock this should have a turbo button. So trying to help find out the needle settings...I am stumped. Anyone know what the stock settings are?

I have read that it needs to be shimmed properly due to the different button.

Anyone that has this engine or know of it please post up what you know.

Thanks for the help.

Jon

Jon I have the Nova 528XR. I'll check the book but LSN I think is .5mm in from flush and the HSN is .5mm out from flush. I'll double check though.

The High Speed Needle position is approximately 4.5 turns opened from the fully closed position.

The position of the Low Speed Needle must be flush with the housing.

Base settings for the engines.

Great info but are they for the turbo button or a standard? I thought this was an easy "help a fellow RC hobbyist" but seeing how complicated this is I will have to re-think this....

But I want to get him running right.

He is using 20% and getting temps of 300+. Not sure what plug he has but it looks like an odonnel plug.

That is what is making this complicated. I have sealed up the engine already but I find no settings for this mill using a standard button. Called AMAIN but they are too busy to answer...

I will try that and see what happens. Thanks to all for your help.

those are the ones i posted ;)

Except that is still does not answer Jon2's original question, which is what are the needle settings for this engine with a STANDARD PLUG HEAD BUTTON.

Jon2, I'm trying to hunt down the manual for my Rex P5N to see if it can possibly give some guidance. Not sure it'll help much, though.

Wondering if it just needs the shim(s) added and use these needle settings?

hey guess what, its STILL THE SAME. Therefore, it answers the question.

The shimming should be the same too.

I will try it. Monkey thanks for the help man too. I know that turbo buttons may or may not need more shims. I am hoping this solves the case but if not I will suggest to him getting the turbo button for it.

I thought all Novas are shimmed for 30%. If so, then the lower nitro percentage could help account for why his temps are so high.

Ah forgot that.. The red one.DOn't know just yet aht the size of that red one is though

I think it's an 8mm If he had the thing tuned with one restrictor (the smaller 7.5 or 7.0) and stuck in the 8 and didn't retune it could be part of the issue. Generally 30% would make it run cooler as well, what brand fuel?

Well I did not get a chance to run it on his CRT as he did not come yesterday. Looking around, I found out what you said may be right. The Red restrictor venturi insert is 8mm. I have thus returned the HSN to 4.5 turns out from closed and the LSN is now flush with the carb. I set the idle to about .5 to 1mm of an opening. I couldn't find my calipers.

I was using 30% oddonells but have been using 20% since it was free. I plan to run the 30% once I get my new rig.
