I read a lot of threads about what tools are best, and what is most needed. But I am not really sure what set of tools I will need for my Lazer zx-5. Do I need those hex drivers? And something for the small nuts aswell I guess. Dont know what else I would need.

Could anyone help me out with some links to good sets? I have honestly no idea what to get, theres so much to choose from. *Lost*

The lazer has philips head screws, so just a good #0 and #1 screwdriver will be sufficient. Moody makes some really nice ones and can be found at HobbyTown and better hobby shops.

There are a few threads with regards to hex driver selection. Also check with Team Fasteddy, they carry some very nice drivers sets for a great price.

Thanks for your reply, SD.
Are the Philips screws the ones with the "+"? Cus my lazer actually only got like 3 screws like that. All the others looks to be hex screws - They got 6 corners.

Are the Hex Socket Wrench Set what Ill need for all the nuts thats on the Lazer?

Yes philips screws have a "+" head on them. If you only have three philips screws then the previous owner upgraded the stock screws to hex(I did that to mine also). You might as well replace the 3 philips with hex screws to make wrenching easier.

The hex socket set is for all the locknuts on the Lazer. You'll be needing the 5.5mm size for all the 3mm nuts, and a 7mm size for the wheel nuts, though it is nice to have a complete set for other rigs.

Yeah, I guess he did replace them. Nice surprise, he didnt even mention that when selling.

Ill see what hex sets to get then. Thanks again.

Its been discussed ad nauseam but I bought a set from integy when I got started a few months ago and have already thrown them out, I'd steer clear of that brand

I'll second this. The Integy drivers are total garbage! I was given a brand new set, I mostly use the 2mm driver and within a week it was already rounding and not worth a crap. Steer clear of anything Integy.

I also have a set of the Ofna drivers and those have held up great. I did snap the tip off my 2mm, but only after about two years of use, and I was trying to remove an over locktited screw when it snapped, but it was still not stripped. Ofna also has a free tip replacement, just send it back with $3 to cover shipping and they will send you a brand new tip. I sent mine back and had a new tip within about 8 days.

Ah, thanks for the warning! I was considering the Integy tools. Someone recommended the Factory Team Hex Drivers. So I guess I could try either that, the Ofna set or some Hudy tools? Hudy might be a bit expensive?

One issue that is common with any driver is when they are used with inferior screws the tips do wear out faster. I've had a HUDY driver go bad after just a couple weeks of use when I was wrenching on some friend's rigs that had low quality screws. I also have a Dynamite red handle set that has lasted me three years with just one tip that I had to replace.

That is no excuse for your integy sets going bad but it is a possible reason.

Possible but I put a Tony's screws kit into my truck after the first wreck so it was only a week or so into it, just integy using inferior alloy metals I think.

For reference can you post which Integy set you purchased? They have a few different sets, some with coated tips and also different handles.

Also just because it's Tony's doesn't mean it's perfect. I've had bad batches of Tony's screws too.

I doubt it highly that that was the case with mine SD, same screws that I had been using the Ofna drivers on for two years, and in one week the Integy driver is junk.

In your case it was user error. Next time chant this while working on your rigs...."rightey tightey, leftey loosey" JK!

SD this is the set I bought, they are the premium tini coated tips
7pc. Integy drivers
As long as we're on the topic, when it broke a tip for the second time I contacted Integy directly about whether there was a warranty on these or what the deal was. I emailed them on 9/10. Didn't hear anything back until 10/7 and all they said was register on the website and then reply to this email with your user name and we will see about a discount! In the mean time because I hadn't heard anything and didn't expect to I contacted Tower hobbies to see if they had any info and after explaining what happened to their customer support they sent me a new tip new charge and I had it two days later NO QUESTIONS. I asked if they wanted me to return the broken tip and they said no we appreciate it but these have been a problem so we're just trying to take care of customers

I went on a hunt for tools about a year ago. The Dynamite tools I had used for close to 2 years were wearing out and it was time for a new set. I wanted to get something different then the dynamite in hopes of finding a better set.

First thing I did was post on this forum to see what everyone was using. In result of that post I went out and spent 90.00 on a set of Hudys. Overall they are a good set but I had 3 issues with them. the first is that FOR ME they are to long and felt uncomfortable. Second is that the handles are all one color and it was a hunt to find the proper wrench to use. And third is that the metal they use is brittle and I snapped off the two smallest tips more then once the firts week I had them.

I then went and got a set of Thorp (MIP) hands down the best tips I have ever used. Again, the handles are all the same color and the handles are also to small for comfort. They also have fixed tips so if you do brake one your only option is to replace the entire wrench. All the wrenches vary in overall size and arent uniform. I still have them and do use them.

My search landed me on the Integy set. Integy makes some crap but their hex wrenches are great. They do not make the tips, only the handles. The Handles are color coded so finding the proper size is much easier. They are ribbed do they dont roll as well. The length and over all size is uniform and feels comfortable in my hand. I have been using the set now for close to a year if not longer and haven't rounded or broken a tip "YET". I now have 2 full sets, One for home and one for the track.

Fore the price of a 7 wrench set you wont go wrong. they are 60% less expensive then the Thorps and the Hudys. Once I saw the Value and the quality were great I added them to my store. I dont sell a lot of products in my store only ones that I have used and will recommend to my friends. If you haven't used their Body Reamer, Its hands down the BEST on on the market and well worth looking at for your pit box.

Hope this helps.

I USE INTEGY TOOLS!!

I have the same set as Coach Z and my 2mm rounded out in about a week. Personally I would not buy a set of Integy tools after my experience with this set. The handles are pretty nice though, lol.

This is the set I have been using for a few years now and I love it. Plus it has a lifetime tip replacement warranty.

Ofna Hex Wrench Set

I use the Integy hexes and have had fair luck. My only real problem is that the smallest one has already twisted on me. There's still usable bite, but the shaft has twisted almost 90° just above that. I assume it's because of softer metal on a really small hex size. That's been my only real complaint so far.

I also have a Dynamite red handle set that has lasted me three years with just one tip that I had to replace.

I'll second that recommendation! I've had the 1.5, 2.0, and 2.5mm Dynamite set every since I got my buggy.. which was probably 2 1/2 years ago. They are still as good as new!

So basically I can get almost any set, as long as I like the looks of them and how they are to work with? :P Ill certainly go for tools with replaceable tips.

Ed - I agree greatly that the handles are great, any suggestions about tips that I could replace them with and continue to use the handles?
