Depending on the engine, some are pretty well broken in after a quart, others are broken in after a gallon.
I haven't had an engine yet that I felt was ready for ripping after 5 tanks... The earliest was 14 75cc tanks (about 1000cc's) with an OS15CV-R(X).
Rarely do I start to really let it rip until I've run at least 1/2-3/4 gallon through the engine. The first 500cc's or so are very crucial to the life of the engine. Usually in the next 1000cc's, the engine lets you know when it's ready.
When it starts to run easier, the temps calm down to a stable level, it idles easily, starts easily, the pinch is still there, but not busting your knuckles with the starter... things like that, it's getting close to being fully ready.
I had about the same (around 1000cc's) with an orion wasp 18 engine I put in my t-maxx years ago. It was ABN vs ABC like most engines are now. Instead of chrome plated sleeve, it was nickel, which isn't as durable and long lasting.
