So winters coming... My tmaxx manual says not to run it in snow, but screw that. I want to make snow ramps damnit. So what can I do? I have the traxxas waterproof servos, I could silicone the receiver and batter cases, but what about the engine sucking in water?
 
Waterproof all your electronics first. Then cover your cooling head in either aluminum foil or a sock to keep your temps at operating temperature. And run with a body on and a air filter and you should be good. Just remember that you are more likely to break parts in the cold because the plastic is more brittle.
 
Putting the battery and receiver in balloons is easier, then just ziptie the neck around the wires. You can buy hardcore off road/mud air filters that have a cover. As long as you aren't trying to plow through standing water or slush, it shouldn't be a problem though.

Keep in mind that when snow/slush/ice cold water hit your engine, it could cause serious issues with tune to say the least. In extreme cases, if the engine is running overly hot, ice cold water could cause it to crack.

I run in the winter though. I try not to run when it's below 25F or so, mostly for my own comfort. Batteries die far faster in cold temps than warm, so you have to keep mind of that as well.
 
Yeah what he said ^^! I love running in the snow. I've run in temps down 15F with my Savage and I didn't notice any more parts breakage. But a T-Maxx is more brittle than a Savage anyway :D
 
Sure you can! Heres some pics of my maxx a few years ago I took running in some fresh powdery snow in NC. I don't think I would run it in real wet slushy snow, but it's a blast running in some nice powder.

its fun as hell to rip it around in the snow but make sure to blow it off with a air compressor or something when ur done and wd40 bearings and stuff or u will rust up
 
Looks like you had fun Ncnitro!!! In nice powder that just kinda fluffs away its gotta kick butt!!!
 
i ran mine in the snow up in micigan with the maxx scoops and it was a blast nothing to do a wheely in the snow with scoops it was sweet... i would not run it under 35F it was like 40F when i ran mine
 
I just purchased a T-Maxx 3.3 and was wondering this very thing seeing that I live in minnesota. My question is did you guys retune the carb for the cold temps? Won't they run really lean if you don't?
 
I didn't think about the snow hitting the hot engine...maybe a blazer body or something like that would help. Oh well, I was planning on getting a new engine in spring anyway..:)
 
I usually don't run the same engine in the winter vs the summer. I use an older engine for winter running and my good engine for non-winter. Then if it blows up, cracks or just generally wears weird due to the cold temps, I don't care.

Usually they run a bit colder in the winter and that can cause wear that goes somewhat unnoticed until warmer months. Once the engine is running 220-250 in the summer, since the engine is worn more, it runs like crap or has no compression. But, when the engine runs around 180-200 in the winter, it runs fine.

At least that's what I've found.
 
I broke both my front and rear bulks hitting a speed bump in the cold. The tmaxx plastic definately gets brittle in the cold.

Both had the receiver in a balloon and either dipped servos in plasti-dip or sealed with RTV or factory sealed with o-rings. I trust the factory sealed ones the most. The o-ring on the output shaft of the servo is key to keeping the water out. Especially on almost all throttle/brake servos since they stand upright.

Also either ballooned the receiver pack or dipped it as well (depending on the rig).

On the revo, I used the dip on servos/battery with a matching yellow balloon for the receiver:

I run all winter long. I have not had a day yet I was afraid to break out the Savage or T-maxx. (That could because it never gets below 50F here too) But back in the day I had ran them both in the snow. Had my Savage turn into a solid block once....froze up all the wheels when I ran out of fuel and took too long getting it gassed back up and restarted. Oops.
