Thinking about building this

I've been thinking about building a track in my back yard, instead of having tooo truck me and the kids to the local track. The demensions are 100'x 75', the problem is other than renting a bobcat, what type of dirt should I use. I will probably wind up having a lot of people popping up to what to use it, you know freinds and such, and want to make it as good as possible.

Any suggestions?

I just read a similiar question in Last months Rc driver make, and they said just to use the dirt available. Unless your planning on doing it for a buisness or a public track, its ALOT of dough to drop. (Around here top soil is like $13 a yard..which would be CRAZY spendy to do a whole track). other than that, sorry but I couldnt understand the rest of what ya were saying..lol..Damn southern accent

Thinking of building a small track. I was going to use what was on site. (Got plenty.) Probably take 2 tandem loads of dirt for that track if ya have to truck it in?
Don't know what ya have out there. If I was going to truck it in here, I would just tell them "fill dirt," very little rock.

Not trying to derail your thread, but do ya have anymore sites with track plans on them?

The local club was thinking about changing the track up, so they asked eveyone to come up with some Ideas. I just drew it up on auto cad just to enter something. They decided to go in a different direction, so I fiquired I build this at home instead. I've got few others that I messed around with, but didn't think they came out as good.Let me know what your think of, as far as dimensions and technical aspect, and I'll see what I can do.

It looks pretty good, but I would suggest that you take out some of those 180* turns, they take away alot of speed and are a pita for mts. We have a track at our house as well, and we had a layout similar to yours, it didn't take us long to change it. instead of all the tight turns make a few sweepers.

Well I've got some friends who run 1/8 scale buggies, and I'd like to keep it interesting for them too...what am I crazy...it's my track! :madface: lol.I'm just trying to get the most out of the area that I have.

I actually find the new layout more challenging because your trying to carry more speed more of the time. With the other way it was accelerate/brake/accelerate.....you get it. With the new layout there is more throttle control involved therefore makeing it more challenging. Thats just my opinion and I'm sure you'll love your layout whichever way you do it.

I'd say the moguls are a bad idea...they are just way too much of a PITA...as far as the switchbacks I like when there's a B-line through the middle of them so if you hit the turn right you can keep speed down th emiddle.....if you use regular fill dirt you'll probably want to get a roller or some kind of ground pounder to keep it tight.....the half track bumps are interesting but I'd take 2 of them (every other one) out in each of those sets.....okay now that I tore your track up to make mine when are we invited to the grand opening

Holy crap, if you invert that layout from right to left (mirror image) its the exact same as our track. We just started out with a left turn dirt oval, and set it up that same way to make more turns (and added jumps of course).

yes i agree the sharp turns are kind of a pita, i suggest maybe 2-3 tight tight turns a sweeper or two jumps scattered about and i like it when they have the little pit lanes to.

At our indoor/off road track, we use Filtered Clay and for the hair-pin turns we bank them to help the cars/trucks get around faster. You can alter the elevation of different lanes so the build up of dirt for the banked turns will not affect the next lane. The main thing to watch out for when building up lanes/turns is to not end up with blind spots. he guy at our out-door track mixes mulch with clay, the mulch helps it hold moisture better. Thanks for the great suggestions,I may have to go back to the drawing board. Change it up a little. As far as what the dirt is, I went out there today and dug down a little and found clay. I'm not sure if the whole area is like that, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed. So, when are you guys coming to help?

I take it ya won't have to truck any dirt in? That'll save some bucks.
I wasn't thinking of one being that big. (never been to one) Hope the "friends" that are planning to race with ya are going to be good enough to help.

Wish there was enough interest in one here. The few guys I talk to drive 2 1/2 to 3 hours to race. They talked about putting one where we fly, and the guy that owns the LHS keeps telling me he is building one. Haven't seen either.

Thanks Digger.. The local track isn't that far away from where I am..just lazy.You know your lazy when you'll break your a$$ to build something that 20 minutes away.lol. Thanks for the link, that'll help alot. Yeah, I talked to my friends, and they said as long as there's beer and no track charge they'll help..figuire it'll take a least a weekend, 6 guys, 3 beers each per hour, DAMN...mabye i should just go to the local!!!LOL
