My right hand took a fair amount of abuse today. That damn pull starter is so far down there that it is dang near impossible to get at!!! I ended up taking my fuel tank off and hanging it off the side, start the engine, then reattach the fuel tank. What a PITA! My first question is can I extend this about another inch so I can have better access to it? If I can I assume I just loosen the knot and add some more fuel line or something as stiff.

I had the needles set according to the instructions to it started on the first couple of pulls. Of course getting the first pull seems to be the biggest problem. I managed to get 4 tanks of fuel at an idle. At tank 5 I am still finding that I need to loosen the glow plug a quarter of a turn so I can start the engine. Is this correct? When will the compression start to loosen up a lil?

I was going to start running at low to mid RPMs for my 5th tank but I am having some tuning issues. I can get the engine to idle with no problems, but as soon as I get on the gas it kills the engine. Is this a sign of too rich or to lean? My guess is that it is to lean. Correct me if I am wrong. The needles are still set according to break in specs to I can't see it being a lean problem. Of course my next question is which needle to adjust? I am assuming it would be the LSN.

I think that is it for now.......

Ok, when I was breaking mine in, I idled 2 tanks, then leaned the hsn up so that it would putt putt at half throttle, did this for another 2 tanks, then started the leaning up process.

To get to the initial putt putting phase, hold the truck off the ground (or set it on something so the wheels are dangling). Start trying to get into the gas. If memory serves me, the "factory" settings are slobbering rich and you wont get past half throttle before it dies. Start leaning the HSN intil you can get to full throlle and have the engine NOT die. This would be a good time to put it on the rubbers. Repeat the above process untill it will run at WOT and not die. Run it on pavement that is pretty much level.

If you have a temp gun, use it. Keep leaning until the temp gets up to about 200 when you're running in this rich WOT state. Do this for 1 or 2 tanks. Then start leaning until you get to about 250 over the course of 1 or 2 tanks. After this, it's pretty much broke in.

Adjust the LSN by letting it idle for about 5 to 10 seconds, then apply throttle. If it bogs, belches or hesitates, it's too rich and is loading up the case. Lean it 1/8 turn, clear it out, let it idle for 5 to 10 seconds and hit the gas. Repeat until you can idle for 5 to 10 seconds and accelerate without and loading.

By the time you get to the leaned state where the temps are regularly 240 to 260, the compression shouldn;t be a big deal.

Hope this helped,
Whitt....

Thanks for the info Whitt. That should get me back on track. I have tomorrow off of work. Depending on how my morning goes I might be able to mess with it some more.

What did you do about the pull starter issue? Or did you mod the rotostart so you can use it? After today I have been thinking about doing the mod that I found online. Can I adjust that without any problems? I would assume that it won't cause any problems. I will just have to keep in mind that I don't have that extra inch to pull.

To tell the truth, I didn't do anything to it, and haven't had any trouble with it either. One thing to be really careful of is the body mount clip that adjusts the mount height. By default, the round end is pointing to the rear. I wasn't careful on one pull and got a chunk of meat taken out of my index finger. Turn that clip 180 and save yourself some pain. After you get it broke in, you can pull it thru one TDC and have enough to pull on to get it started. I know it's a pain, but there's no other feeling when you are left with the t handle in one hand and watch the cord get slurped like a spagetti noodle into the starter.

I'm not sure about the roto mod, but if it entails modifying the engine, I wouldn't do it. But that's just me. I've read a bit about folks that have done it, and the results have been mixed. I have a roto, and it isn't on anything at the moment (get my drift?). The roto is cool, but you have to carry it around all the time, it's real hard on 1 way bearings and is battery operated. If you're careful when breaking in your engine, feed it good fuel, and run good plugs, it will start reliably with the pull start. That's just my experience, so take it as you will.

Oh man I feel you pain.. I just put in an 8 port yesterday.. Like Error said.. the stock setting are way too rich.. I am on my 6th tank of puttin around at little to no throttle... I gradually turned the HSN a complete turn and it still boggs badly.. I also gradually turned the LSN a half turn..I was told that to make it leaner than what the manual (well 2 page paper) says to put it for optimum performance.. Tomorrow I will have mine up and runing completly.. Man it is hard to pull over too.. I did the same thing you did...let the tank hang from the side.. I have the one body clip in still so it wont fall off I just rotated it..I found once the motor is warmed up..it will start without an problem in yankin it.. To start mine for the first time I kept having to first removed the tank..pick the truck up in the air, with the other hand grab the pullstarter.. Then throw the truck at the ground and pull up hard at the same time.. Thats still how I get it to turn over when its cold..I sure hope it gets better..

Maxxkilla - Thanks for the info. To help with starting the engine loosen the glow plug a quarter of a turn or so. Then start the engine and tighten the plug back down.

I tryed that.. Nothin worked for me.. Even with the glow plug out it could not turn it over with out chuckin the thing at the ground.. Its better now.. But it still is hard.. What kind of plug are you usin?? I use an OS #8

Believe it or not, I'm running Duratrash Gold plugs in both my hyper 8 and Picco .26, and with very good results. I broke the Hyper in on the Duratrax carbon plug, then switched to the gold when it was broke in. Only cooked one plug during the process.

Sounds about right for the Hyper's break in. The pain will be worth it in the end.

Here's a simple mod to the pull start to get that handle a little higher. What you will need: Fuel tubing (about three inches), a set of needle nose pliers, and a small clamp of some sort (clothes pin, lockjaw pliers, etc.)
1. Cut about a three inch length of fuel tubing and set it aside.
2. Pull the pullstart line out about nine inches and use the "clamp" to keep it from retracting.
3. Use the needle nose pliers to pull the retaining bit from the top of the pull start handle (the part that the end of the line is tied around). You may need to use something long and slender to push this piece out of the handle from the bottom (where the line feeds into the base of the handle).
4. Untie the line from around the little barbell looking piece of metal.
5. Slide the handle off the line.
6. Slide the existing fuel tubing off the line.
7. Place your three inch piece of fuel tubing on the line.
8. Replace the handle on the line.
9. Re-tie the line around the barbell looking piece of metal and pull the handle so that the line gets locked in place on the handle.
10. Remove the "clamp" and allow the pull start to retract the line.

You should now have a pull start handle that is readily accessible above the height of the fuel tank and above the shell if you are running the stock shell.

Hope this helps.

The only thing I would add is to be very careful when doing this step. Damaging the cord might cause fraying and eventually a breakage (by pinching the cord too hard, or with a metal clamp). If you have some surgical clamps, put some tubing over the jaws to prevent this.

Good suggestion. Now back in your hole hobbit.
=devil

Thanks for the info Sky. That is exactly what I was looking for to help with the pull starter. With this new information I should be able to get her running today or tomorrow for sure.

Like everyone else has said, the facroty settings are VERY rich.
What I had to do was fire it up and let it idle, then SLOWLY give it throttle. If it seemed like it was bogging too much, I'd lean the HSN needle slightly and try again. I think I went in about 2 turns from factory before I could run it for break-in.

One of the ways I got around the compression issue (my LHS did this part) was to hand-lap the engine first. With the engine out, put in a few drops of after-run oil and then rotate the engine about 50 times. Using a flywheel wrench works good here. This wore the piston and sleeve just enough so that the pullstart could get the engine to turn over past TDC.

JR, i have a gallon and a half in my 8-port and i still have to loosen the glow plug a 1/4 turn the first start of the day. i personally don't believe this is a problem. It's a sign of a healthy engine.

if you don't loosen the plug, you run the risk of breaking the pullstart. i proved this point on saturday. i was getting ready for the Sunday races and i figured I could skip the glow plug step. so did. the result: broken pullstart. (i have already purchased a starterbox on ebay)

with a monster truck you don't have the option of a starter box. my advice, therefore, is to just keep loosening the plug on cold starts.

it's very very important that you have a clean head. if you have dirt and junk on head when you loosen the glow plug, junk may get between the head and the glow plug washer. this will cause a leak eventually.

Here is a picture after extending the pull starter. Now I can reach the cord without having to remove the tank. Time to burn some fuel.....

Told you it would work. Glad you like it. Now finish that break in and start crushing some terrain.
:D

Well I am glad to report no more woes here!!! Man is this thig fast... I've had a few people tell me a Savage with an 8 port will only wheelie in the grass....man o man are they wrong.. I just scratched up my nice coolin head:angry: :opps: .. But man this thing is fast.. Now I need to change my gearing.. I still have the stock clutch and CB..

There's nothing wrong with the stock CB or clutch. I run both with a Picco 26. I had a 16t CB on it, but it was too fast (for a MT). Yeah, there are better flywheels, shoes and bells, but don't knock the stock till it melts off.

I never said there was sumtin wrong with it....I just think it winds out too fast.. Maybe a 15T CB will work.. I guess no more street wheelies..but hey.. TMAXX speed:banana:

Naw, I know what ya meant. I ran my savage witht the 16T CB and the Hyper 8, and it Rocked. That was the config in both of my current videos. If you ever need more power, try the Picco 26. It's never in 1st gear. If you haven't already, get a motor saver filter.
