Hello i just got a rustler 2.5 yester day off craigslist and the guy said it ran good and the last time he ran it was three weeks ago and i went to put some fuel in it and got the ez start stick and pushed the button and put my finger over the exust pipe and it reved up and let my finger off and pressed the gas and it reved up again and it just went back to the original sound and cut off to where it was just the ez start just powering it and i really new to this. HELP ME PLEASE!!! thanks

Make sure the glow plug is good/new.Then check back with us. There's a bunch of variables to why a nitro engine doesn't run right. We'll have to start at ground zero.:)

Holy run-on sentence Batman!

A glow plug, depending upon brand, mark up, etc. is 5-8 bucks at your LHS...

Yup, you need to get a manual for your Rustler if you don't have one, and start from the beginning. It may have run fine for the other guy, but with limited experience you have (no offense) you can't jump right into the middle. RTFM, and put needles at base settings, learn how to prime the engine and start it, learn how to tell when an engine is flooded, how to check your glow plug, etc.

Traxxas is a big company and I think they have DVDs now like HPI with their R/C products, so you should be able to find some basic how-to videos on the Traxxas site to help you along too if your more of a "watch and learn" than a "read and learn" (like me)...

i suggest getting more than one plug ;) sometimes they burn out fast ..depending on the tune ..allways have a couple spare ones at all time ;)

ok i just got a new glow plug. tried to start it and the same :[. so i thought it was the blue wire so bought a new one and a glow plug ignitor and the motor just keeps spinning but not starting wtf HELP:(

The best thing you can do for yourself is sit down and start watching videos or how to tune and troubleshoot nitros on youtube. Videos can help a lot more than reading sometimes. And as stated before, there are many things that will make these engines not run. Have you tried returning the needles to the factory settings?

You either have an air leak, a clog in the fuel system somewhere or it's just tuning issues. I'd seal the engine, set the needles to just shy of factory. Get rid of the blue and yellow wires while the engine is out and stick to the separate ignitor. Make sure the fuel cap is sealing and that the head bolts are tight. Seal the carb, header, backplate and hsn housing(banjo fitting) with high-temp, sensor-safe rtv. Make sure and let it sit over night to dry.

Also you have to put into factor where the car came from. Was it from your state or somewhere else in the country? Every state has its different climates. Check to see if fuel is going through the lines into the carb. Did you try unflooding it? To unflood take out the glowplug, turn the car upside down and crank the engine. It could be a clogged line, or may be too lean for your weather conditions and needs to be richened. Being a beginner, I wouldnt go strait to resealing the engine unless you know what your doing.

While I understand and agree with you guys on the engine sealing. If it is an RTR and ran for the owner before selling it (not sure if the OP saw it run or was just told this) I'm still thinking it is basic stuff like needle settings, fuel delivery or quality, flooded engine, bad glow plug, etc.

I'd hate to have the OP pull the engine apart, maybe mess something up (no offense) and then get it all back together and it still not run.

I think he just needs to go down a basic first-start checklist (why I recommended getting the manual).

1. verify glow plug is good with glow starter
2. ensure engine is not flooded and cranks over clean without plug in place
3. set carb opening to spec
4. set needles to baseline
5. ensure fuel is good
6. ensure fuel is getting to carb when priming
7. check fuel lines, fuel tank cap, etc.

Anything else to add to the list?

well ok how do u make it richer? and i turned the car upside down for 30 seconds is that good? thanks

Ah, Speed Racer? You need to SLOW DOWN and read this: http://www.traxxas.com/products/nitro/nrustler/blueprints/NitroRustler-Owners-Manual.pdf

This is called an Owner's Manual and it is used by people that own things, like a nice Traxxas Nitro Rustler 2.5. What this does is help TEACH someone new how to get their model up and running QUICKLY and CORRECTLY.

Rather than bombard us with run-on sentences and grammar that is just a hair better than Appalachian, next time you need to pitch a deuce off, take this with you and read it.

For the record, the Traxxas on-board ignitors don't seem to heat the plug hot enough to start. I always use a separate ignitor.

:hehe: And yeah +1 on the igniter and reading the owners manual AND watch some videos on the proper way to tune.

Dude, that's funny! :D

Anyway, back to our regularly scheduled program..

I agree though, slow down, read the manual like you just opened the box and the truck is BFN. Go section by section, setting up the truck's fuel system, electrics, etc. I've not owned a Traxxas product with the onboard heater/starter, but if the guys above say it's weak I believe 'em, so grab a stand-alone glow plug igniter. Pull the glow plug out and stick it in the end of the igniter and see if it glows.

You'll get it, just slow down, take it one step at a time and eliminate each possibility (bad fuel, flooded engine, bad glow plug, etc.).

Hang in there, we'll get it running!

Okay, i got it I un-flooded it, then i took it out the next day. Few minutes later when i put the ez start on it started right up. I also read the whole manual. I never got one in the first place cause i bought it used? Thank you

You seem like funny guy, but I'm not that big of a retard!!!!

I NEVER use i separate ignitor.. the blue wire work 100% of the time with mine and my GF's 3.3..

same here ;) ....i just use my ignitor to start it when the engine is cold ..that way i can leave it on while it warms up a bit .....but just the ez start system works good to ..never had major problems with it

Awesome! Glad to hear you got it going. Like I said, I'm not a Traxxas owner, so just going by what was posted above me. Feel free to use the onboard system and if you have any hard starting issues possibly keep a hand-held igniter as a back up?

Now go reak some havoc at the park with that thing! LOL
