Well, the good is I finished building my Savage SS, took me 8-10 hours of wrenching time (I did tear apart diffs and add lube, however). That was friday/saturday. Started break in - and finally had time today to finish my last tank of break in before I was ready to start tuning. 6 tanks of break in, First 4 were complete idol. 5th was quarter throttle. Sixth tank was mostly 1/4-1/2, w/ blips of WOT.

It wasn't too cold when I was tuning, so the temps were ranging about 250. I noticed when it leaned out (end of tank) it jumped up to 270, but had SICK power and speed. I think i'm gonna have to mod the tank so it keeps a steady flow all the way through.. that leaning out crap at the end isn't too cool. I'd rather have it tuned, and ran fairly steady for the duration of the tank than get super power at the end...

The bad.. well, there is really no bad? I have found to really like this truck. Turning radius isn't that great, but I can't complain.. its a big truck. Oh and those damn body clips! They're a pain to pull off w/o pliars, so I've gotta throw on some zip-ties or get those rubber things I've seen hangin off em in pics of others' rigs.

Well the others... I need to adjust the transmission shift. Seems that it doesn't want to shift when the tires are still grabbing, but if its WOT w/ tires spinning, it'll shift after a few second delay.

For whatever reason, the wheels aren't layin flat when its sitting. they lean out at the top. I'm gonna try adjusting the arms, but they are pretty damn close to bottoming out already, and i dont see any other places for different adjustment that'd bring the top end of the hub in further. Looks like only 1 mounting position on either end.. If anybody else had this prob and knows how they fixed it I'd appreciate some feedback.

I've gotta add a few immediate items, like a failsafe and get a glow plug ignitor. (Currently using the one attatched to the starter box for my XXX-NT). Gotta look forward to doing the 4-gear diff mod in both diffs, figure out a better throttle return because stock spring sucks balls (and broke) - and the AE spring was workin great up until the last 2 tanks. The spring on the servo is trash and that may be the cause that is makin my throttle return spring not do its job. That ofna servo mod looks good.

So many things to do... So little .. time? Well I have to admitt, I'm having a LOT more fun with this Savage than I expected. When I bought it i was second guessing myself and thinking about that REVO -- but since I"d already ordered it through my LHS, I couldn't screw him by not picking it up. (its a small shop, and under new ownership, but he's tryin hard to make it work) I'm happy with my purchase tho, so all is well.

That is a nice truck and you will have fun with it, don't mess with the shift point until you get the engine tuned for performance. I used an adrenaline tank guard and a OFNA buggy tank on my savage, I could look up the part #, got rid of the lean problem at low fuel level, but the tank is smaller...I really liked that mod, looked great and worked even better!! Adrenaline guard also let you see fuel level, its a great addition. Anyway have fun with the new truck!

If its not a lot of trouble...I'm curious to know what the part # is.

I'm pretty sure he's talking about this one:Ofna Tank

New era has a couple kits to install this tank: Stock Tank Mounting Behind rear shock tower

I made my own little brackets near the stock tank place and it's worked out well for me. But I have more room than a normal savage as I'm running 4 buggy shocks instead of 8 savage shocks.

The Uniflow mod will get rid of that lean-out issue. See my build page for details on this mod.

Thanks olds..rossb

What makes the savage stock tank have that problem... Is it the shape of the tank that makes it restrict fuel flow?

I think it's the shape and size of it. A good rectangle from top to bottom gives you good pressure from full to empty. The weird shape of the savage (and t-maxx) tanks doesn't help things.

The buggy tank is a rectangle and it has internal baffles to keep the fuel near the pickup. I think I have mine mounted to low though... need to work on that a little bit. When I have about 1/4 inch of fuel left, it starts to lean out a little bit. But the top of my tank is lower than the carb. If I raised it an inch or so, that would more than likely help.

I ran the same tank on my maxx, but it was higher in relation to the carb. The carb inlet hieght was about at the 1/2 tank level. On the maxx, there was absolutly no leaning effect. It would run the tank bone dry and not lean out until it was sucking air.

I've noticed that my savage would die like it were out of gas with about 1/8 of a tank to go. Didnt think anything of it.
Thanks for the explanation!!!

Thanks for the feedback guys. - Rossb, Your mod is the one i was talking about to fix the lean out problem. I'll probably be doing that, and if I really screw it up, get the rear mounted tank from NewEra... tho that may throw the balance off on the truck, but I'll figure that problem out when i get to it. Gotta mod the existing tank first.

Well... at close inspection of my Savage just a few moments ago, I realized my right front arm wasn't traveling properly. Left side was good, right side wouldn't travel compeltely up, and when I tried to force it, it would stick. I started poking around trying to figure out this and that... apparently I've already tweaked one of my shock pistons. Go figure. Well, I guess come wednesday, I'm buying a new set of shocks.

Any suggestions? I've been thinking about a full set of Integy. I'm lookin at the MSR5s.. spotted some on ebay for like $120 for all 8. Any comments?

FYI, tweaked is when you can bend it back and it works perfectly. Bent all to hell is what you have, and can't bend it back. For my bashing truck, I just use stockers. You can buy a full set of SS shocks for cheap on e-bay.

Ok, then they were tweaked :D I got off early today, took the shock out to the edge of the driveway and nailed the shaft a few times with a hammer. Straightened it out pretty damn close. Doesn't catch up or show any signs of binding when the shock is depressed. Still gotta try to adjust the lean (camber?) on the wheels.

Yes Olds, that is the tank I was talking about. It is a great mod for the savage, coupled with the adrenaline tank guard it was perfect. Here is a link with the pro's and con's of several tank mods for the savage, good information, I still recommend the ofna tank and adrenaline tank guard, vertigo performance also has a guard that works wth the ofna tank and tey also make great stuff, so look into that option if you like. Thanks for that link, Hudler. That was a Great test review that was posted. Think i'll be getting that header tank mod done to my savage :)
