The definition of "broke" and the concept of having fun.

If the saying "if it aint broke, you're not having fun" is true, then what constitutes "broke". Is it "I gotta run to the LHS for a minute to get a part"? Or "I gotta wait for UPS to bring my part I ordered yesterday"? Or "I'll just rob that part off my other truck"? Or "looks like I am going to get another truck"?

What time frame of disfunction constitutes "broke"? If you bring more than one truck/buggy/st to the bash, and you leave with at least one fully functional R/C, did you have fun, or did you have some degree of fun? If a critical part goes AWOL during some non-holy-crap type thing and leaves your R/C disfunctional, does that constitute "broke"? If something is easy to fix, but you don't have the part, is that "broke" in a less fun way than say, if the part was onhand yet difficult to replace?

Or does it really matter? If your R/C is truely bullet proof, and nothing ever breaks, would you ever have any fun with it?

Yeah, I know. I just hate it when ya catch a little air, make a good 4 rubber landing, turn to come back and only the front tires are pulling. This happened to me today. At first I thought I had busted the rear CVD, pretty awesome, but unlikely considering the bash factor of the jump. Maybe a hosed reverse module, nope, all 4 would be dead (due to the design of the mod). Fried rear diff, nope too smoothe of an action (just put the spider diff in and it's a hell of a lot stronger than stock). Blown rear outdrive CVD, nope they're fine. Then I noticed that the drive pin on the brake hex adapter was gone, not sheared, just gone. That Jesus pin screwed me, backed right the hell out and left me with front wheel drive. One stupid little pin, which I had loctited in. If anyone is running the GPM (or other brand) metal brake hex adapter, be aware of this problem. It's a great part, and I love mine, but the drive pin will work it's way out. The stock nylon adapter provides enough friction so that this won't happen, but the all metal ones won't prevent it from happening.

All I could say to myself was "LAME". I had fun, but I hate it when stupid breakages like this happen. Technically, it aint broke, it's incomplete.

These sound like reflective thoughts after a bash session and a few beers.

I would have to say that the "fun" would be directly proportional to vehicle "up-time" in any bash session. If you bash all day and don't break anything or bash all day and break something at the end of the day then the "fun" index has probably peaked in either case.

On the other hand, if you suffer a non-field-repairable breakdown early in the session, and are forced to go home early or be content with watching your buddies finish out the session, then your fun index will most likely have dropped significantly.

This fun index could very well bottom out if multiple vehicles are brought and all suffer critical damage or failures well before the end of the session.

Me too, it's just hard to find a good bash spot here without getting arrested, or shot. I've been looking, but I haven't been able to find a bmx track, or a decent construction zone lately. The city is building a new $18M stadium, and the site is prime for the Savage, but ther's all kinds of "posted, you ass will be shot or arested" signs all over the place. Most of the "regular" spots are hard tack, like landing on pavement, or dirt that's as hard as pavement.

I'd have to agree with hicks. Fun is proportional to up-time. The longer it runs before I have to go home, the more fun I have. The time my rear diff blew before the mains, I was pissed. When I spent like %80 of my time at the bash in NY trying to sort out my wet electronics, I was pissed. When something doesn't work, it bugs me. I'm a problem solver. Until a problem is solved, I'm agitated about it.

Up-time coupled with phat air = fun.

I completely disagree with this.

I could run my RC for hours on end in a giant circle at 1/4 throttle.
Wooooo Hoooooo That was the most fun I ever had.

For me its 100% about the experience. Win, loose, break or not, Its all fun. Wrenching is fun, ordering parts is fun, walking over to pick up parts is fun and best of all........ Crawling around on my hands and knees looking for the part I saw flying >>>> that way is fun as well. The hobby is fun every aspect of it.

I feel for the people that believe they are having the maximum experience just because they didn't break their RC or got 5 tanks of fuel before they needed to go home. If I have 2 hours, I use the 2 hours either Running or wrenching its all fun for me.
