I hope you didn't actually watch him inject the needle...my parents wouldn't let me see my dog for its last mouments and I balled...and balled...and balled. Its better now, that in whatever you believe, he is somewhere where there is no pain or suffering, roming with your loved ones and other dogs.

sorry to hear about that man. i went through the same thing with my cat ( i was a cat person). i had her since i was 6 ( I'm 17 now) her name was rusty. she was a nice rust colored persian. never had no problems. loved to spend time with the family. then she started peeing where ever she was. we took her to a vet and was told she had some kind of bladder infection and there was no real way to stop it. we asked about surgery. they said there is a possiblity that it might help but is was small. my mom decided to put her down since she was already old. she made me go with her. i felt so bad for a couple days after that. man i still think about her from time to time.

Last dog I had was a little Eskimo Spitz. He had a little baby blanket he laid on at night. Ol' lady told me to lay him on it when I buried him. Well to make a long story short I thought I was going to handle it a lot better than I did. It is like losing a member of the family.

I know I can't say anything to help ease the pain. You did the right thing and he isn't suffering.
If you think it will be hard on the kids, maybe take them to the animal shelter and let them help pick out a pup?
