My Hobby Plus Terranaut showed up today. It was delivered undamaged by UPS and the truck looked perfect.

After watching some videos and hearing the horrendous whine coming from some of the Terranauts, I decided to take off the portal covers and grease them all thoroughly before running it. They were fairly well lubed from the factory with what looked like thin silicone (or maybe lithium) white grease. One of the eight was a little light on lube but all were OK out of the box. I added some thicker dark grease in hopes of squelching some of the gear whine, which I think it did as it seemed to be quieter than some in the videos.

Everything was set up nicely from the factory and it required just a bit of steering trim to be running right. End points were good as received. I was happy with the gearing. Low seemed low enough and it moved out plenty fast enough on high, without being ridiculously fast. I ran it for a while outside where my driveway had a thin layer of hard-packed snow and some loose snow around the edges. I then ran it indoors on carpet and hardwood floors and set up some obstacles for it to crawl over. It's impressive. All good. All fun!

It takes a little while to get used to the rear wheel steering, mostly because the lever for it on the transmitter is quite small and short. I plan to add an extension so the lever falls naturally under my thumb. This will hopefully make it much easer to use and also reduce the chance of accidentally hitting the winch button while using the rear steering lever. Many reviewers complained that the winch button was too easy to hit by mistake while using the rear wheel steering. I didn't have this issue but I didn't run it very long. I think if it does become an issue, I'll add a ridge around the button on the transmitter with a bead of J.B. Weld or by glueing something on it.

Battery life was great... I had barely run it down to storage charge when I put it away. A cell check showed the battery's two cells had exactly the same remaining voltage. A good sign for the battery.

Now, the long wait until Spring when I can get the Terranaut outside on some crawling territory! It's in the teens here now, with tonight's low being forecasted to be at zero. High of 17˚ tomorrow. Ugh!

Why wait? Get it out there!

For God's sake... it's 8˚ F outside right now!

I'll get to work on my Tx mod shortly. Photos to follow that... I don't want my title changed to "Plays with cat poo"!

I get it, it’s about 32 here, which is warm compared to the beginning of the week. I think it was 12 degrees on Tuesday.

My Tx mod was a win/fail. Initially, I secured the little lever extension rod with medium CA and fortified it with baking soda. It did not adhere well, but I was able to use it for a bit before the glue joint failed. I re-glued it with some very old 5-Minute epoxy and that was also a fail... the hardener was really thick and apparently no longer viable. It never hardened fully. I'll clean it all up and re-glue with J.B. Weld this evening, so it will be ready in the morning. I'll try to do a little better job so it looks more presentable. :)

I almost forgot... a link to very short .MOV showing some of the lighting. It has functional headlights, fog lights, tail lights, front and rear directionals, reverse lights, and rotary lights on the roof, variously selectable in five modes. Really cool.

Awhile back I had a charge cable that was ready to break. I had a replacement on the way, but didn't want to go without that cable for a few days. I had an idea to wrap some cloth tape around it and soak that tape with CA glue. The sticky glue on that tape had a chemical reaction with the CA, and started smoking. 30 seconds later after the vapor cleared, that tape was a hard as a piece of limestone. That was over a year ago and that cable is still going.

Interesting thing with the cloth tape. I have some, so I'll experiment with it.

As far as my Tx mod, after running the truck a lot more today I'm finding that the stock rear steering lever, now that it has a hole drilled in the back and has been roughed up a bit, functions much better. The ideal solution might just be to rough up the lever or glue a small patch of coarse emery cloth onto it.

I will J.B. Weld the little stub extension on it tonight as planned though, and might end up shortening it. I'll know tomorrow when I get to drive it with the mod in place.

As I become more experienced using the rear wheel steering, the model is getting to be even more fun. It is amazing how well if can operate in limited space due to the steering. When you look at the length of the thing and then see how maneuverable it really is, it's hard not to be impressed. I really like it.

Final evolution... Channel 5 lever drilled to accept a short stub of plastic which is secured and coated with J.B.Weld and colored black with a Sharpie.
(J.B.Weld is the hobbyist's duct tape!)

It works well. The Terranaut becomes more and more interesting and enjoyable as I set up some increasingly tight layouts to maneuver through. Tight maneuvering with lots of backing up required is almost a brain teaser at first and a brain exercise at the very least. What a fun little truck!

PS - I received my T-Hunter V3 yesterday and did the same addition of grease to the portals. Its portals were lubricated lightly with what looked more like oil than grease; different than the Terranaut. Adding the grease quieted it down a little, but not a lot. That little bugger is whiny. Another fun vehicle, though.
