I believe on any engine 220-250 defrees Farenhite. I'm no expert, but thats what I believe I've heard. But if someone like bustedgears or revoranchers posts something diffrent, listen to them.

Plaidfish swears by the os 21 RG. He regularily races them. He might be, um, err, unavailable right now, but try PM'ing him to look at you question.

I've had 3 in various applications. Mine all ran well between 210 and 260. Anything less or more and they didn't give you much power and ran badly.

On a typical bash day in my savage in 75 degree F weather, mine runs around 235-250 if I'm running pretty hard. If I'm just putting around and crawling over stuff, it runs around 215-225.

Revo, I can't say I race ANYTHING regularly...lol...the only constant I have when I go to the track is the chassis...lol....I've run a buttload of RGs into the ground tinkering and comparing though.....I shut mine down at 265*F.......I've had a few that ran like raped apes at 280 but they didn't last very long....had smoke and everything still but just liked to be hot to get real performance out of it.....so I just shut it down immediately if it's not giving the power I want and the temps run hot...return screws to factory set and retune it.....seems to help keep the temps in check.......it's more than likeley just me going tooo lean on the LSN to get the holeshots and then changing the HSN later w/o correcting my tune before running hard......anyway, I ran my stuff at the track I got robbed at last year and got fed up w/ all the newbie questions, so I left before my last day off turned to poopoo on a plattter for me......

plaid, you avoided the forum for 2 weeks because of newbies? LOL.

How did it go at the wanna be thug track?

280 on an RG21? Hot, very hot, no wonder it ran like a scalded nun.

I been here...just during the day mostly.....work is pretty hectic w/ the new change....I'm doing the Vulcan mind meld w/ the new guy so I can leave the engineering dept to him.....
the WBT track was OK......I had a bent CVD and it was pulling my truck to the right real hard....I did manage to get some nice jumps off the big hit....I love watching 10lbs of metal fly w/ reckless abandon in the air....makes me fell all gooey inside.....
280 definately too hot....It was cool to watch the budget mill gettin a lil glory for a while.....but it went out like a rock star adn burned out too quick....

temp range for HPI T15

Is anyone here familiar with the HPI Nitro Star T15 motor?

I have been trying to figure this out for a while now, I asked friends and shop techs and they all give me different answers.

I first asked a friend and he told me that he runs his around 180 F. I don't know if that had something to do with the fact that he moved to Maine or if he uses his finger for a temp guage. One of the shop guys I asked told me that I was running too hot around 220 but wouldn't tell me a temp range.

I read somewhere a while back that 220 was a decent range. I was at that range 4th qtr last year, but now its getting warmer and I'm easily hitting 250.

I'm having a hard time tuning my motor when don't know what the safe temp range is. I had my SN RS4 running sweet at 263 and haven't run it since, to keep from burning this motor out. I suppose that every motor might be a little different, but for a .15 should it get that hot?

TRF ,
first and foremost welcome to the site !!
the .15 like olds said 250 is fine if it starts getting close to 280/300 then richen it ,remeber cold air is denser then hot air so there for richen it ,not lean it to make it run hotter.
i had a os .15 and it liked it hot .like 290/300 i just kept it tuned ot run in that temp range ,had a good smoke stream but just liked to run hot ,so like you stated not all motors are the same .
tune for performance then chekc temps if you feel it is too hot then give it a click or too rich and it will be fine

Hi Olds97 and racin38, I appreciate your help. It's great how you guys don't mind helping out, some forums I've been in were made up of members that weren't so nice.

I am new to the nitro cars so I was worried about shortening my new motors life. I have been tuning my motor by ear and seeing how fast the car goes then checking the temp. I think I know where it wants to be I just thought that it was too hot for the motor.

I know that forums have certain rules, I wasn't sure if I was breaking any of them by just posting, so thanks to the admins too for not chewin me out. RCnitrotalk.com is great man keep up the good work, hopefully soon enough I'll know enough to help others out too.

TRF, I had a Nitrostar .15FE by HPI, so I'm guessing they're at least cousins, and it liked it a tad hotter than some of my OS mills. I got the best out of it at around 265 or so, but I tried not to let it get above 275 for any real stretch of time (but that's just me.) Just as a comparison, I have an OS .15 in my HPI MT now, and that thing runs like a raped ape at 240-250. Anything above 260, and it runs like horse crap!

Good luck! Have fun!

I finally got a chance to run the car again today, I eyeballed the settings and got it started. Once I got it running I let it warm up so I could rev it a little, then I got the high and low speed needles dialed in.

For the first time since I got the car, I have been able to start it easily everytime. I know this thing has to be tuned fairly decent or pretty close now. The motor is more consistent with the smoke now instead of dumping a lot of oil at low rpms and only smoking at higher revs.

My SNR was used when i got it and it came with a 13t pinion and a 52t spur. I did go from a 13t pinion to a 15t. I was curious how the motor would handle the higher gearing since it is a lot stronger than the 15fe that comes stock with the car.

There's always something new you can put on these cars so I'll save that for another topic.

I thank those active members in RCnitrotalk for helping new people out.

Temps

I often play "pitbitch" at my local track and pit for fellow club members.
One thing I always do is temp their cars. My old TTR Pro21 engine ran nicely at 240-250°. I've seen RB S7-II engines run at the upper 260-280° ranges quite happily and HoBao Hyper engines at a 220-260° range depending on tuning on all of the above.
I ran my personal S7-II yesterday and it ran happily at 250-265°F with oodles of smoke pouring from the pipe, running ODonnels 25%

TRF good to see you got it running sweetly but I haven't seen you mention anything about a temprature gauge. I do recommend one as the temprature gauge is a valuable tool for any Nitro owner.

Yeah I forgot to put that on here. I picked up a standard digi temp guage when I purchased the new motor. Right now I'm running at 265-270 range but it has been cold the last week and I will have to retune it when it warms up again.

It would be easier to tell how my power band is working out if the local track was open instead of just running up and down an alley. So far I'm not getting super rich smoke or maybe I just can't see it that well, it is consistent tho. It seems that I get a lot of bog when I set it rich enough to give me plenty of smoke.

I finally got a hold of a manual from HPI the other day and the info you guys have been giving me is pretty consistent with it. Too bad I couldn't get it before due to a bad link on their site.

Everything seems to be working out so I'm working on getting it tuned even better. I was wondering how long do these motors last with average use? When this motor goes I'm not sure if I want to rebuild or just hit ebay up for an 18SS motor.
