It's not crucial, but a great tool when starting out in the Nitro end of this hobby.
It will help you in tuning your engine to get the best performance without overheating the mill. They are cheap enough now, ($30), so I would definately recommend having one.. At over $150 a mill, it is a wise investment...

you can get one as cheap as around $20 at tower its a duratrax one. Temp guns come in handy time to time.
