i can smell a little nitro, but not too, bad, and no smoke. just straight nitro, so i am definately flooding. how would i do a soapy water test?

would i be able to do this while the engine is still on the truck? or would it be to dificult to see and reach things?
 
you will have to remove it to do the test properly.


i would change the glow plug first or check that your glow plug starter is fully charged.


i will make a video today of an engine getting flooded and how to recover from it - getting it running from stone cold with extra rich settings........might be of help to you :)
 
@ cjquadrider : I have the same exact engine in my MAXX & I have not experenced any of the metioned isssues your having.. I do beleve 89% of your running problem is your TUNE is OFF...
ARE you getting "Smoke" out of your pipe Not billowing but a nice steady trail when WOT is applyed...
I would suggest just keep adjusting HSN & LSN needles & checking engine temps dont exceed 270 You have to spend some time with the Rig because thease adjustment's dont just take a few min's & your done..
Also set all Needle's back to factory settings " it's in your manual " what factory setting are " & GO from there Also if you have a friend that run's Nitro Rig's ask him to lend you a hand in tuning & if all else fails & you still can't get it Traxxas has a DVD out on Nitro setup's & Tuning If your dad has a fairly new TRX rig you should already have the DVD if not call up Traxxas & have them send you one out I have personaly watched the DVD not that I nedded to but found it very helpfull & very hands on & the guy explane's alot to you..
 
@SSX The glow plug is brand new and works well, i have checked, the battery on my igniter and starter packs are fully charged. I'm sure that video will help alot, thank you.
@Grave I'm not getting any smoke, just nitro. So i am running rich for sure. What is WOT?

I can't really do the soapy water test, my Dad, REALLY doesn't want me to take the engine off. I'll see if i can though.

I took my truck to the hobby shop, and they started it right up, a few quick tunes a quick test run, and, here you go. its done. haha, of course it would work well whe ni bring it in. i dont know how they do it.

il show you in the video, it easy to recover from a bad tuning setup, flooded engine. i didnt get round to it today but i will defo get it done for tomoz!

cjquadrunner Glad myself & SSX could be some help to you Nitro fuel coming out of the pipe is not a good thing "but it could be fixed with a good tune" ONCE you obtain a tune you should get a nice steady stream of "SMOKE" out the pipe when you apply wide open throttle also known as "WOT" when you acheve a nice stream of smoke your tune should be OK... Also CJ run your rig on a Bench ALL 4 WHEELS OFF THE GROUND ask your dad to "Work" the Throttle on Transmitter wile you adjust the setting's I would set the both needles to factory settings then ONLY adjust your HSN 1st once you got that setting OK you can work on the LSN.... REMEBER tuneing doesent just happen in a few min you will have to spend some time & keep trying until you find a decent setting REMEMBER dont exceed 270 Deg's also when you adjust needles ONLY do 1/4 turns @ a time

thanks for the encouragement. right now I've got a pretty good tune. its a nice stream of smoke and it runs well for about 20 seconds, then... it bogs down and wont accelerate much, it sounds horrible and then i shut it off, but my temp gun broke just before that started happening so i couldnt read the temp. but when i touched it t seemed pretty hot, so i thought that it wasn't getting enough fuel, so i richened the hi speed a bit, and that didnt make much of a difference.

Also, the guy said that my engine isnt leakings, but my pipe has a slit in it, and thats what leaks. so doesn anyone have any suggestions for getting a tuned pipe, or stock, if tuned, what kind.

That guy, he would be the one at the hobby store who fixed my truck.
 
your exhaust has a split in it?

might make a difference but wouldnt make it run fine then bog like mad. you could run a nitro car with a straight through pipe aslong as it was tuned....so a split exhaust wouldn't be that bad.

stock or tuned, there both cheap.

Edit: i did the first part of the video which i will upload shorty but my glow plug starter went dead so at the end of the video I'm just pulling away at the pull start for nothing LOL.

when my engine starts and stops, is that similar to to what yours is doing?


ps. my accent is english countryside and i have a slight cold so i may sound odd to americans lol.

Wo. You make those tunes like nothing. You really know what your doing. But when my motor dies that is pretty much what it does.

its just knowledge really, once you understand how everything works, what engines react to in terms of lack of fuel / too much fuel you can almost pre-set things to a good starting point.

that video was bad really, was not prepared ( glow starter ) i will make another one tomorrow, rain called it off today. il will really flood the engine this time as in the video it started way too easy.
 
Tuning is one of those things that once you get it down it just clicks & you say Ah ha, that makes sense.

I struggled at first with my first nitro, and after many frustrating days I got the tune right, saw how the different adjustment affected the engine & though that wasn't that hard, but till I got to that point it made me wonder if I was ever going to get tuning figured out.

Hang in there, you'll get the hang of tuning, it just takes some knowledge & time like SSX said
 
Thanks. I have a question. When the weather is warmer. Do you tune your engine to be richened so you get more nitro to lube and cool off the engine?

generally with most engine types, hot weather requires you to lean out the mixture where as cold weather requires a richer mixture.

as for using fuel too cool your engine, you need to set it slightly richer but you then lose some performance.

a correctly tuned engine with plenty of air flow should never overheat no matter what the weather is like.
