I have 2 T Maxx trucks (used) with the black transmision one is stock and the other has some aftermarket parts (chasis, engine Ofna Pico .21 Max, etc.) I have them both running but still working on getting them tuned accordingly. The question I have is are these a single speed or two speed? . I am assuming since they have a single spur gear they are single speed.

All Tmaxx black transmissions come stock with a 2 speed.
The gear change happens internally inside the transmission. It works on the same principal as an external double spur gear/clutch bell 2 speed, it is just inside the transmission.

There is a kit that can be installed to make it a single speed but it is not commonly used.
To check for a 2 speed just remove the rubber plug in the top of the tranny and look inside and turn the spur gear slowly. If you see a gear that has a hole in it for accessing the shift point it is a 2 speed.

What would cause the stock Maxx not to shift? I runs up nice but not shifting that you can even detect. Could it be the clutch? I am fighting with getting them tuned as well as the stock Maxx is running very rich/ cold. I am .75 out on the LS and 1.0 out on HS.
Maybe around 165 F. It will run for a while (no shifting as noted in first thread) and then die alomost like it runs out of fuel or loss of fire on the plug. Starts right back up. I was thinking that the return fuel line maybe the issue as it is a little long and runs up over the head.

I know but would those lean of settings still run cold?? I am using a carb that was on a 2.5 4-Tec and would think that it is the same as the 2.5 in the Maxx.

Sorry it is the Traxxas 2.5 engine.

Carbs are the same on the 2.5, 2.5r and 3.3. You have to be lean. Never seen those numbers associated with carb settings.:) Are the needles smashed?

The needles could definately be messed up as it was a used purchase. I will check them out. The only difference in the carbs is that one has two orings on the base and the one I took off of the Nitro 4-Tec has only one. I am sure the one with the 2 orings is older version carb.

Carb issue for sure. You may wanna get a whole new one if the engine is any good.
BTW that missing o-ring should be still in the engine. There's only one traxxas composite slide carb.
