My dad wants to look into a new engine for his T-Maxx. The current 2.5R is pretty old, and he's looking for more power. I've been looking around for him, and found an OS .18 CV-R. Would it be a direct drop in? It comes with the header, exhaust, engine, etc. Also, would it be an upgrade compared to his current engine? Or no? If not, what are other good direct drop ins for the classic T-Maxx?

You could always use the Traxxas enigne replacement plan and get a brand new 3.3 for it for I think $80.

$80? I may consider that then. What else would need changed to fit a 3.3?

Yup he's right. The $80 was a 3.3 to a 3.3 when I looked into it.

Any TRX® engine for new TRX 3.3 with pull starter
$110 plus $5.00 shipping & handling

TRX® 2.5R for new TRX 2.5R with pull starter
$85 plus $5.00 shipping and handling

TRX® 2.5 for new TRX 2.5R with pull starter
$85 plus $5.00 shipping and handling

TRX ®Pro.15 for new TRX 2.5R with pull starter
$85 plus $5.00 shipping and handling

Look on ebay. There are a few on there right now in the price range you prefer.

get a picco .26 max its a direct drop in for only $200 and would make your truck go like HELL !!!

I think I'm just going to go for the 3.3. I've been watching eBay and they're going fairly cheap.

If the maxx you currently have is setup for the 2.5R, then you will need a rear exhaust, slide carb engine. The OS18CV-R(X) is not either of those. It's a side exhaust and I believe only comes with a rotary carb engine in the pull-start form.

The TRX3.3 is the cheapest and most direct/drop-in upgrade.

The old OS18TM was a great engine and I'd lean towards that one if OS hadn't discontinued it. It was less temperamental than the 3.3, but the power curve was almost the same. The 3.3 has a bit more power than it though (according to XRC dyno charts).

Keep in mind, the 3.3 would benefit greatly with a new tuned pipe vs the old crappy traxxas plastic pipe. As would the 2.5R.
