SUT RTR crtique

having got back into this, i was used to building kits. but w/these RTRs (which have helped gas greatly as i see), its new 2 me. between the hyper on teardown and the SUT on initial assessment, i was very disappointed at the assembly of both, particularly the SUT.

the team tech article is comprised of much i've what i would do normally when assembling a new kits suspension. but it did point out some other flaws. just now i really have been convinced on using storm short shock shafts and the right locking nuts on each end in place of the cheesy hinge pins w/a set screw. in addition the rear knuckles could use another 1/2 sized shim 2 reduce slop w/o binds.

i still have some shaving i want to do in the same area on top of the front carriers and knuckle 2 prevent/minimize rub from the pivoting knuckle upon steering input.

the car was gettin way outta control and it was found that this was the issue.

along w/the pro steering plate, bellcrank bearings, and adj'ble servo saver pipe (30bux 4 a pipe, yeash) (i put an ofna SS on anyway), and changing out those cheesball rims and tires it turns into a lot of work.

dont 4get changin the diff fluids, the stock grease is a joke in this truck. so is the air filter. i did put my mx3 radio sys and hitec st servo in this as well

these chassis stiffeners are a joke as well. but the pro versions are 22/pc, the fioroni option 1s are 35. their just left over tierod ends and the front likes 2 pop off on occasion already.

any1 on the fence buyin the RTR and the pro, buy the pro. dont have 2 deal w/much if any of this. can use ur own capable radio sys...then pick ur motor.

the stiffeners, front knuckles, kingpin holders (another 1 of the RTR's downsides), shock towers, drive adaptors all will eventually have 2 be upgraded 2 pro parts here b4 spring.

fact it doesn't include even a rear swaybar is amusin 2 me, however i can deal w/it as its already tail happy 2 a degree.

the motor is a strong point though, very stout 4 a basic 25. i still have it on the fat side, and i dont mind that. however i think a leak may be present at the idle screw, did check and oring was there, but i think i wanna put more in there any thoughts?

just thought i'd put some stuff up here such that i could inform/educate any1 lookin at this truck. if u want it 4 what it is and to race and have a good machine to do so. get the pro...please. if u want a RTR, get a revo (race) or a Savage (backyard)

PS-1 of the universals (left front) wasn't done very well, it didsnt pivot well at all, had 2 do a lil dremel work 2 free it up. b/c it was tight and had a horrible vibration to it. prolly caused the destruction of my wheel very quick.

UltegraSTI, I have to agree with most of your points regarding the SUT, but have been generally impressed witht he truck. Not that may change once I gett around to breaking it in. There have been two things so far that has been a pain however. For one the my truck missed was missing the two of the 4 14 to 17mm adapters the go on the wheel extenders. The reason I found this thie before breakin or driving it was because I mod'd the steering plate and had to remove the wheels. The other was the steering plate mod.

I am on a very strict budget, but really wanted to upgrade the steering plate after reading the Team Tech Article. I could not spend the cash for the pro plate, let alone two to double up for added strength, so I doubled the stock one.

The frist issue, after ressembly, was too much toe-in in the front wheels using the middle holes in the plate. So I had to go back to the front holes. Then I realized the stock screws were too short. So I found some longer hex head screws but needed to shave part of the bulk head assembly in order to get the wheels to turn fully. I may have to shave more off, but will check later.

Other than that all is well so far. I think I will do the diff oil mod and upgrade the steering servo before I break it in. I have a Hitec 945 servo in my buggy I am thinking about putting the SUT. I have already changed the radio to my MX-3 (Same as you) and have changed out the reciever. I have a synthesized Novak reciever laying around to it is now in the SUT.

Did you use two plates for the rack or one? And is the geometry of the pro plate different than the stock plate?

Thanx again for all of the info

all the suspension binds mine had, u prolly wanna go thru the entire suspension w/a dremel or sander 2 relieve any. i'm runnin middle hole 4 now. i'm workin on toe, b/c the car is too jittery, granted i was runnin on my eroded crushed stone driveway w/raised center due to wear, yet still. i want 2 put an extra shim (maybe half sized) in my rear knuckles b/c its too sloppy.

moreover on knuckles....BUY urself storm short shock shafts and get the right locknuts and put them all in place of those cheesy hingpins and the tiny setscrews in the knuckles. even slottin the pin w/a dremel is only a marginal improvement.

no its similar, just rides on bearings and isnt made from that cheap blue anod. ally.

BTW, the clutch springs are too soft in this truck and/or shoes too heavy. bankin on the springs. feels like a 1:1 car w/a slipping clutch or an rc10 w/a slipper 1/4turn too loose.
