I recently just noticed after running my MGT today that one of my front left shocks has oil coming out of the top of it. My question is do i have to buy a brand new shock, or can it be rebuilt, or should i look to aftermarket upgrades if this is a common problem?

If its coming out of the top it could be one of a few little things.
1. The cap has came loose.
2. The rubber seal has riped.
3. The cap has cracked.
All of which can be replaced with stock parts for not to much cash. If it is leaking out of the bottom then you may need a rebuid kit but thats about it.

I have had that problem many times. Problem with the stock MGT shocks is that they are plastic. Instead of rebuilding them over and over after each run, upgrade to some since big bores like some 1/8 ofna buggy long rear shocks. Or the Unlimited Engineering ones. They both look almost identical IMO. Slap some stiffer springs and thicker oil and see how it feels. IMO you should get all 8 since it is a big truck.

If you can find em.... you can also try the Proline powerstrokes...

Thanks for the info guys i do apperciate it....I think I will look into those replacement shocks. Hey one last question I saw some decently priced threaded aluminum shocks for MGT on ebay made by team blue star they looked nice and around $55 for all eight does anyone know if these are good aftermarket shocks? Any opinion would be helpful I am new and dont know too much about all the different aftermarket parts available

I would stay away from the Team blue star stuff. I remember we had a member or two that tried that ebay special and found out that the shafts bent real fast....

The problem you might find with using rear 1/8 buggy shocks is that they are longer. They are quite a bit longer than t-maxx shocks and they will be somewhat longer than MGT shocks.

I had bought 8 OFNA 9.5 rear buggy shocks for my savage. With multi-position custom towers (or nova towers), you can get about the same ride hight/travel out of them. I'm not sure if you have as many options with the MGT as I did with the savage.

What I do know, is that buggy shocks are stiff. 8 of them non-modified on my savage were useless. With the size of the holes in the pistons, the thickness of the oil and the stiffness of the springs, they would barely compress off of jumps with a savage. If I dropped the savage from 5 feet onto concrete, the shocks would barely compress and the truck would bounce. I had to drill out the piston holes and drop to 30 weight oil. Even then, it was still stiff. I could probably drop to 20 weight oil.

I'm not saying don't try it. I'm just saying you more than likely won't be able to just slap on some buggy shocks and be off and running. The benefits of the buggy shocks, depending on what brand you buy, you can get a very well built shock that will last a long time between rebuilds and they are built tough as nails. The longevity and toughness out weighed the tuning problems I had. My savage can take 8-10 feet of air all day long without incident. Weekend after weekend...
