I got the temp gun from radioshack the fellows around here like to suggest. It was like $80 or something.

I always take my temp right at the glow plug. The glow plug reading is always higher and I figure the higher one is correct. I can see getting a false low reading off a fin or something, but getting a false high reading? not possible.... unless you missed the glow plug and accidently aimed it at the sun... whoops... hate it when I do that :x

Also I too like to do my own wrenching. The SuperNitro is a .21 conversion on a SportMaxx or something? I haven't seen the .21 conversion yet, but I'm sure I could pull off cutting metal if needed. Dremel pwns you!

Super Nitro is an HPI naming convention for their almost 1/8 scale on-road. People with a .21 conversion and some other hop-ups have gotten those cars to do over a 100mph!! I paid $50 for my RS IR temp gun so you got ripped.

bummer bro - my grand dad is on the way, alzhiemers, going up to conneticut in june to say goodbye. :ot:

NOVICEROB - are u asking what a supernitro is? if so - it is an onroad touring car made by hpi. Like the hpi rs4, but its alot bigger, kinda in between 1/10scale and 1/8 scale

I wouldn't believe that "Doesn't strip gears at all" part. If you do it get at least an aluminum pulley for the rear. Use the urethane- backed rear belt, since they stretch less, and carry plenty of them. Your going to find that HPI tires are pretty much useless with a .21. The thing is going to haul major arse as you put it, but its a terror on maintenance.

newbie, it will be done saturday. i will try to get pics up by tuesday , because my sister is graduating from college on sunday and monday , so it may limit my time. but we will see

randy, if i do end up striping gears, there is a company that has metal gears out so that i wont have that problem. the maintenance issue is probably right, but i dont mind working on the car keeping it running well. i will be gettin the new belts also, and i have a toolbox filled with the standard ones already just in case. and I'm using the super sticky hpi tires, so they should grip just about as well as anything else does, but i just dont know how long they will last

i have one question for you all tho, What kind of pipe do you think i should run ? i need one that can tolerate a 21, but one that is small enough to fit my super. this could be trouble. i figured that i may try the cvec with the dual outlets to get some of that extra flow that i need but still keep pretty small size. any ideas ?

Supernitro17:

A .21 pipe will fit on the super, HPI makes a steel pulley which I'm using now. I was going through pulleys and belts constantly, this way I only go through belts. Now to the tires, the .21 has too much power for HPI Super Nitro tires, they blow right off the rims and will wear down very very quickly. Some people run RJ Rides and say they hold up longer, your best bet is to pick up 1/8 scale tire adapters from Wolfpack. If you plan to race it, I would recommend that you get the Proceed adapters since they are the same size as Super Nitro tires. If you just plan to drag the car, get to Serpent adapters, but the car will push while turning.

You might be better of with a big block .15, if you just plan to screw around, and not a Novamega EVO4 MS. The .21 in the Super leads to all kinds of trouble. There aren't alot of choices in tires in the first place, then you compound that by adding a motor that just terrorizes every component of the car. The car just isn't designed to take that kind of power. I have a Wolfpack conversion and Serpent adapters, I'm running the Wolfpack 2 speed, with 17/43 and 23/36 gearing, the car when it's running is a pure joy to watch, and will do over 80mph. But its very expensive to upkeep, and isn't something that you can just take out and bash with.

scrapped it

well , even after seeing the .21 run at like 80 mph with no problem , i decided to go with old reliable . i put in a fantom .15 and a 2 speed as opposed to the 21.... its a good thing, i dont think i would have been able to control the 21 in it, its insane, but people told me bad things at the hobby shop about it. the one guys 21 runs fine, but he also has unlimited access to free parts. but anyway

the fantom hauls ass, its running cool at 190-200 is the hottest i get it, I'm going to try and lean it out a little bit tomorrow and get it to about 230ish or even just leave it at 205 (fantoms normal temp is from 205-280) and I'm throwing in a set of new tires tomorrow. all other things are in the car. and its working great, ill put up some pics or vids soon.

Smart man, if I had to do it over, I probably wouldn't, but when you have that much money invested in something its hard to let go. But it really is a thing of beauty when the car is screaming down the parking lot.

well the fantom is brokjen in ,,, it is FAST . the only thing is, that its running really cool . i had it at full speed for most of the 5th tank, and it was still only getting up to like 190 at MAX. then yesterday i was driving it around and it was only at 150! this kind of concerns me. because during break in it was only running at like 185 -190 and they say to break it in running it at 205 ... and that never happened.

today i plan on leaning it out A LOT (a little at a time obviously) and trying to get the temp up (normal temp is from 205-280) so I'm going to shoot for like 230 or 240 ish... or should i just leave it running cold ? i mean , it runs fast and its fine, but i want to try and squeeze a little more juice out of it, and I've also heard that running too cool is not good for the engine and will burn out plugs real fast because it is too rich.

any oppinions ? help me out randyT , you seem to know much about the supernitro and engines and all

I want to install a .21 in my supernitro. My question is what do I need to fit it? I'm going to put HPI's .21 Need help.
