This winter I am rebuilding my somewhat stock savage SS to make it stronger and faster.
So far I am getting a .28 Peak Performance Diablo, the MP steering mod and bullet proof my diffs.
Do you think I should get muffler? new air filter? should I get a 3 shoe clutch set up with nova shoes? what about those lightweight trasmission gears?
What else should I do to make my truck faster, and stronger.

Get a good cb/sg set up. Maybe do the buggy shock mod. A ths racing pipe. Maybe new tires. Also you may want to consider picking up a set carbon fiber tvps.

3 speed, 3 shoe clutch, I dont like aluminum shoes. Motorsaver or equal filter. I like the SS ribbed pipe and you should be set.

Motor saver/HPI knock off filter would be a good upgrade. I'd stick with the heavier gears. From what I've read, the lighter ones won't hold up to high power engines as well.

Also, running a 3-shoe or a slider 2 shoe clutch would also be good. I'd stay away from al shoes though. They require more maintainence and cost more. But thats just my opinion.

As for the pipe/header, I couldn't say. I'm running a non-stock one for one reason... it's quieter. I'm using an XTM maxx 21 conversion pipe with the stock header. I ground the little groove off where the coupler goes since the original manifold used springs and gaskets instead of a coupler. But it works well. I get a lot more power out of this pipe and it's considerably quieter than the stock composite pipe.

I'm also running the 1/8 buggy shocks with new era upper arms. For a racer, running the nova towers with buggy shocks is a better setup for tunability. But being a basher, I wanted to keep the plastic stock towers and the arms have held up well. I'm running 4 supermaxx shocks (unlimited engineering) only.

can someone tell me where to get a set of 1/8 buggy shocks. and how much shorter are they then the stock ones?

Quite a bit shorter, which is why you need different towers or upper arms. But they are really durable.

You can get a full set of 8 with nova towers here: http://www.hobbyshopnj.com/Savage21/

Just scan down a little ways.

Or, you can get a set of 4 here: http://www.hobbyshopnj.com/monmaxx.html
Do a text search for: UE10120

And use these upper arms: http://www.neweramodels.com/cgi-bin...ahgjgjlsfojvctpqfysyjenqodixhesa&part_id=1552
You need 2 sets of the arms.

Here's a shot of mine with the UE shocks and upper arms:

I dont think I want a 3 speed becasue with a high rpm motor it will be in 3rd gear within seconds... Correct me If I am wrong
So I need a new clutch, and maybe a Pipe. I really dont want to add buggy shocks to this savage because then I would turn it in to a racing savage and I dont want that yet, If I can get my dads savage then I will buy those nova M.A.D. towers
Thanks Doug

With the tree speed you just have to adjust the shift points. What set of clutch shoes would you recomend?

I've not had one problem with my lightweight trans gears. After about 3 gallons though the 24.7 Pro and they show little to no signs of wear.I know the 24.7 pro isn't the most powerful mill around but it makes allot of torque and my gears still look good. I noticed a big improvement in acceleration too.I've read of people exploding these gears and heard of them wearing out fast too but I haven't had any troubles with them.

hey olds97_lss have you tried putting those shocks on the original upper arms. I'm think about getting the shorter shocks to lower it for racing.

So do you think the lighten trans. gears will work ok with a .28? I dont want to spend $30 and have the gears blow up.

No, I put them on the NewEra upper arms that allow for t-maxx sized shocks to be used.

Someone at savage-central (i think) used the adjustable plastic upper arms though. There's a hole on the part out by the wheel that he made stand offs for and just mounted them there. I think he was only using 4 shocks as well, but that dropped the suspension to be level instead of like mine.

Here's a link to his site that he has so you can see what he did: http://icow.dyndns.org:90/savss/racer/frontend.html

The guy has done a crap load of stuff to his savage by hand making parts or just a little old fashioned know how. Check out the top left of the page for all the links that he has made for all the stuff he has done.

It is sort of weird how the buggy shocks fit on there to easy maybe HPI was going to put buggy shocks on in the first place.

Olds, could I get a decent shot of thtat pipe so I could get a size comparision? I want to see if any of my .21 pipe s will work...noise issues

Wow, that was wuick, thanks. Much appreciated. I think my THS will work.
