Anyone have any tips on giving up smoking?

I've tried a few times but i loose my mind and get very angry and thats really hard on the family and work life.

Need to quit this habbit before it quits me!

seriously, I had the same problem over 10 years ago. I thought to myself that if I had kids, whatwould I say to them about my habit?

I went cold turkey and never went back. I read somewhere that its a physiological thing at first for 21 days then its all mental. I chewed gum, sucked on lollipops. I had to somehow replace what I removed with something else.

Just be strong man as nicotine is a hard habit but it can be broken.

I think the wife would leave me and all my employee's would quit after 21 days.....

lmao......:)

lmao........
Its funny you say that......... because when i tell eveyone at working I'm going to quit smoking, they all say let us know so we can use up our holidays..........lmao

I'm really that bad........I'm serious
Little tiny things make me go bonkers.

Weird part is i hate smoking..........its a horrible habbit.........makes ya stink.......waste of money........... stains your teeth........... errrrrr wish they would just quit making them......

brb gota have a smoke........

roflmoa :)

if i went to the states for a month i quit forsure.
There cigarettes are just horrible...... id rather throw the cigarettes out and smoke the pack they came in!!

Well, quitters never win anyway... or was it I don't smoke or drink or swear... oh poop I smoke and drink!

I've half-heartedly tried. Been smoking a pack a day for over 10 years. I was fine, for the two weeks "we" tried... I was little edgy, but being database admin support at the time, edgy was normal. My wife on the other hand was like you. She went bizzerk. Snapped at everything, fidgety as all get out, couldn't sleep, gave herself headaches she would get so wound up... wasn't pretty. I come home from work and there were two cartons sitting on the table.

Maybe next time will be the time we win!

Good luck if you try. Just don't be a ex-smoker smoker hater. I hate those people.

I don't smoke or drink or swear...

I heard it as "Damn it, I left my cigarettes at the bar."

2 1/2 years since I've quit. In that time I've also moved and gotten all new furniture.
I walk in here, and all I smell is aftershave. Love it. No more stench on dress shirts, and no more yellow walls.
I cut back little by little for a few weeks, only let myself smoke outside, and only smoked half a cig. On the next trip out, I'd smoke the other half. Nasty.
Finally I slapped the pack and lighter down on the dresser and said out loud, "THAT'S IT."
I've never even had a craving since, and the smell of someone's cigarette is repulsive to me.
Hang in there, good luck. It's ONLY will power that will get you through.
Smoke 'em if ya' got 'em. Just don't smoke 'em near me.

I quit about 6 years ago, it was the birth of my daughter that made me say "hey idiot, you wanna see her grow up, quit smoking!" I did the patch for 2 weeks, once I got through the 2 weeks I pretty much had my mind made up I was done smoking. I also decided I was going to turn things around and get back into fitness and martial arts. I was like you to the point that the first couple times I tried to quit everyone was begging me to start up again ;) One other thing I did a long time ago was listen to one of those tapes you listen too when you go to bed. It worked twice for me until I would go out to the bars with my friends that smoked.

I always tell people "Don't buy them" but I realize it's not that simple for most people. I smoked for a relatively short period (age 16-21) and quit cold turkey @ 1 pack/day. I literally just stopped buying them even though they were easily available all day at work being in the restaurant business at the time. I now understand that most people just don't have the will power to simply "stop". A long time ago my uncle quit smoking after doing so for quite a long time. He did the subsititute thing. He always had something healthy around the house to munch on when he felt he needed a square. Like carrot sticks or something like that. I think it kind of depends on how you are addicted. IMO, I think some people are moreso addicted to the physical habit of "doing something" rather than the chemical dependency. This may be a case where you may have some success with substituting one habit with another [more healthy] one. I dont' know.. just what I've personally witnessed.

word.

Sheesh, people like make me feel like I need to comit random acts of violence. ok, not really but you know what I mean. :)

The state recently passed a no smoking law which prohibited smoked inside of any public facility, including restaurants and bars. I heard there was a bar owner who posted a big sign outside that read "Where are all you non-smokers now?"

Just another example of why this country has two many friggin' laws. They're damn near putting people out of business (small business, the type that makes our economy) so non-smokers can safely go into businesses they weren't going to anyways. But it get's even better.. it's even unlawful to smoke within like 20 feet of the front door... OUTSIDE! :nono: I really hate this subject. Let me stop before I can't fall sleep.

I quit once and I'm thinking about quiting again, I actually thew my last pack away 15 minutes ago. I don't smoke at home, only at work or while driving to and from work. Like Jet said, I want to see my son grow up and I don't want to teach him bad habits...He can learn those on his own.

The first time I quite cold turkey, I believe you have to really want to quite....Not just say I want to quit. I went a little over 2 years and to be honest I never had a problem. I was on a fishing trip got hammered and started up again and never stopped. If you do quite you really have to stay in control even years down the road because it's very very easy to pick up the habit again. My wife quite when she found out she was pregnant (9 years ago) she never wanted another one until about 6 months ago. She didn't have one but I was shocked that after all that time she out of nowhere wanted to smoke. Luckily it passed and she has wanted one again.

I used to feel the same way until I quite. If you ever quite I think you will understand why they feel like that.

Lessen although I can agree with you to some extent about too many frigging laws. And some parts of these anti-smoking laws are dumb. But many smokers just don't get how uncomfortable and annoying second hand smoke can be. If I'm in a room with more than two smokers my eyes will go red and be filled with water, and I will spend the whole night blinking every two seconds.

Why should I or anyone else have to be wary of were we go because of a bad habit other people have.

My uncle caught him self and half his house on fire by smoking in bed.....after that he quit cold turkey. Strange huh? What a wake up call he got....

Anyone ever try ziban...........think thats the name of it.

I can't smoke in the house .........So i dont think ill be burning it down.

Actually i caught the lawn on fire this summer though... :second_place:

If you go the Zyban route, head to your doctor and ask them to prescribe Welbutrin, it's the same thing, and insurance will pay for it as opposed to Zyban. They are both anti-depressants though. Although that may be a moot point since you're in Canada and scripts are generally cheaper up there and your whole insurance thing is entirely different. I do know people that had success with it. I didn't do it because here in the US in most states when you purchase a firearm that's one of the questions they ask, now I know I could lie and say no but I know something would come around to haunt me.

I got a script for Welbutrin and took it for about 3 weeks last year.
I guess zyban is the same then.
Welbutrin just made me wierd. I didnt care about nothing. Didnt crave cigerettes either but just couldnt live like that. I really had zero cares in the world off it and couldnt drink either. Not a drunk but do like to have a few juices on my time off.
As soon as i quit....... i wanted a cigerette within a few days.
I actually craved the Welbutrin to for a while......... lol

my friend did a treatment were you get a bunch of shots on 3 days and then it's some sort of belladonna (YES YOU GET TO LEGALLY TRIP OUT LOL...sort of) pills for a week or 2....he used to dip but the addiction is the same....worked like a charm...I'll ask him what the treatment was called tonight.....

I quit the day I found out my (ex)wife was pregnant with my oldest daughter. Cold Turkey. Yeah, I was a miserable bastard for a bit. But pushed through. There's no magic bullet. I think it's easy to do when you can attach a goal or meaning to it. Like Jet said, we didn't want to have to explain to the kids. Nor did I want to affect their health. I have relapsed a few times. It tends to be my one lingering craving when I am stressed. But usually that lasts for a pack and then I realize it's making me sick and I just drop it again.
One thing is to try to break your typical patterns. If you usually smoke in the car, don't bring them in the car. If you smoke at the bar, try not to next time. If you disrupt your pattern, it'll make it easier.

Yeah I'm getting great motovation looking at my kids.......
I wana be around for them.....
Habbits gota go soon!! real soon.
