hey guys I am new to nitro rc, I recently picked up a used t-maxx 3.3. I can't seem to get it to idle. Every time I start it the motor takes off like its at full throttle and the wheels spin. I have reset the carb to factory setting but it doesn't seem to effect it and the transmitter is set at 0. When it does take off very little light blue smoke comes out and it spits fuel out of the exshuast.....

Did you set the idle with the transmitter turned on and the brakes applied? Also, check to see that your clutch spring is not stretched or if it came off of the clutch shoes.
 
it does sound like your clutch spring is weakend or broken, make that the first thing you check.. because if it is that and you keep screwing with the tune you could get it way off on yourself.
 
Not sure where you guys are getting the clutch issue,if it's running fast the wheels will spin even if the clutch is right. Let's get it idling right first then we'll see if the clutch needs attention.

Start by removing the air filter so you can see how the carb opens/closes. Without starting it,turn on the electronics and check the idle gap. Make sure your trim is 0 and the gap is around 1mm or so,that is normal. Then make sure that it opens fully with he throttle and when you hit the brake it does not close up. Also check that when you raise the trim,the gap opens some. This is necessary for cold starting.

Once this is all good,raise the trim and start it. It will run fast at first and the wheels will spin. Within a few seconds you should be able to drop the trim back enough to idle without the tires spinning. If the engine revs really fast at this point,either the LSN is too lean or you have an air leak.
 
Yeah, that is why I mentioned the idle first...easiest place too start without having to take anything apart!

But if it takes off at full throttle as soon as he starts it, as he had mentioned, then it sounds to me like the clutch spring has come off. So, if the idle is set properly, the next logical place to look is the clutch.

tried again taking racer 1966 advise. started it up and it reved up and i turned back the throttle trim to 0 and it continue to reved up faster and wheels spun and then it stalled, however i did notice air bubbles in the intake fuel line, could that be an issue...
 
Fix your fuel line issues, and retune.

Fuel line is cheap keep extra on hand for occasions just like this.
 
hey guys big update on tmaxx, after I tore apart the engine this is what I found-

Problem 1-Yes, the cluthch spring was shot, it was all rusty and kinked
Solution- have ordered new clutch springs along with new clutch shoes

Problem 2-Apperently when the previous owner had installed the ez start system they did not tighten the screws holding the backplate, also they did not align the groves on the inside of the backplate to the groves inside the engine correctly
Solution- re-aligned the groves and tightened screws

Gotta wait a couple of days until parts arrive, then I will start the tmaxx, let you know what happens...
 
parts installed and ready to run, took it out this evening and boy does it move!!! thanks for all the advise and help!!!!!!!!!!!
still working on get it to put out just a little more blue smoke from exshuast, any suggestions?
 
I am using traxxas 20% fuel and my temps are good, i got it to produce a little more smoke after some fine tuning, thanks again....

the new problem is now that i got it at a nice idle, the t maxx lurches forward now every 20 seconds, it sounds like its loading up and then it lurches forward about 6 inches and stops and the engine returns to a low idle just to start loading back up and doing it again...

any ideas???
