Starting Problem

My Savage x 4.6 is having trouble running. I can get it started after a while , but once i let off the gas it will shut off?? what does this mean?

sounds like your fuel mixture is off you may be running too rich, adjust your low speed mixture screw (thats the little one on the side of the carb) I would try turning it 1/2 turn clockwise (thats "in") and perhaps set your idle a little higher about 1/2 turn clockwise as well. That should smarten it up. Tough to solve this one without a little more information, but try that. Also do you have to give it gas to start it? Thats a sure sign that the mixture is set too rich.

I tried what you said, and it works now. I think it was running to rich. These trucks are SO powerful!...If you just barely tap the gas, it is OFF! it kept flipping over because it was eccelerating too fast. But it's tons of fun.

I just have one question- How do u know if you are running it toolean, because i do not want to hurt the life of my motor.

These engines are pretty tolerable. I always know mine is running too lean when I run it wide open for awhile and it hesitates or dies out for a second(as soon as you back off the throttle is runs again) when this is ongoing I know its running too lean and not getting enough fuel at full throttle. just screw in the high speed mixture screw a quarter turn and try it. As soon as it smartens up and will run wide open its set. I have never had a engine burn down on me, like I say they are pretty tolerable for running lean, just don't run it hard when it is dieing out like I said above, adjust it right away.
