ok i am finally ready to do a first run on my maxx today,,,got it all ready,,charged the battery for the ez-start and went out and ,,,,,nothing ,,,,,
thought,,ok dbl check the plug,,took it out and glowed red,,
ok,then next thought ,fuel,i dbl checked the lines ,,orange too, so i swapped them out for clear ,getting fuel ,ok,but still will not run ,now the guy that had it before me recently put a new P/S in it ,and i did not change the needles
the HSN is at 3 1/4 and the Lsn looks like about 1 to 1 1/2 turns in from flush ,
i am thinking the LSN is set way to lean and not letting fuel in ..maybe??
how fast does the ez-start turn a motor over,,like a box or a little slower??
what are the stock settings for the 2.5??
i want to reset them for my area,i live in central pa ,and the truck came from texas ,,
btw: i am running S&W 20% ,stock med plug ,and clean filter ,,infact the truck is spotless right now,,,love a clean truck

thanx in advance,
rick

it was 45 here today,,,i also tried preheating the head before heading out ,,
just putted reasonably fast ,,didn't even try to start

I had an HPI RS4 that would barely start but not stay started, the new owner tells me the clutch was bad.

i had this thing clean to kit form ,,,replaced what needed and cleaned and even bought a new screw kit to replace all them,
i got a stock heat sink back on it ,,,
how many shims should be under it ,,there was 3 i nthe pack i installed 1 ???

Your glow plug should be hotter than red. Yellow or bright orange is what you want.
It also sounds like the LSN is set much too lean. That can cook the engine in no time at all.
Do you have a temp gauge?

yeah i gotta temp gun ,,but need ot start it first,,lol
and the plug is brite orange,,,never seen 1 that bright

ok,,i am gonna sound really dumb now,,i had the 2.5 apart looking for deposits and stuff to see if needed to be tore completely down and cleaned,,looks good,,i am thinking i gotg the pisto in the wrong way ,which way does the bevel on the bottom of the piston go,towards the intake or the exhaust ????

Starting a stubborn engine.

Put the nose of the truck against something firm so it can't get away from you. If you have an EZ start, keep it running while moving your LSN slowly, one way or the other till it starts to run. If it's a pull start, turn the LSN 1/16 at a time, and give it 6 to 8 pulls before adjusting again. If you get any kind of sputter, you are REAL close to starting. If you richened it to get it to sputter, richen it a hair more, vice versa if you leaned it.
Adjust your LSN and idle screw till it idles well and will run up to half throttle. (get it to running temp before you finalize any settings) When it idles properly, throttle it to half and see if it stalls or bogs down. If it stalls, it's too lean. If it bogs, it's too rich.
Now go to full throttle. This is when you adjust your HSN. Same thing. If it bogs, it's too rich, stalls, it's too lean.
When it seems to be running good, and it's up to running temp, pinch the fuel line close to the carb. It should speed up slightly and then stall within 3 - 4 seconds. If it stops quickly, your LSN is too lean. If it takes longer, the LSN is too rich.
Drive it for a while and then take a temp check to make sure it's at the proper temp. If it's too hot, richen the HSN.
You will have to make small adjustments on the HSN almost daily to compensate for outside temperature and humidity.

By the way, the factory settings are for break in, or a starting point if you really messed things up. Once an engine is broken in, don't expect it to run right by going to those settings.

Heat up the engine with a blowdryer or a heatgun and did you try priming it?

heated it ,,,primed it ,,,blew into the pressure line,,i seriously think i had the piston in wrong,,,there isa bevel on the skirt on the 1 side,,it was towards the exhaust side of the sleeve ,,i tore itdown and seen that ,so ichanged it around,,,
was that it????
hopefully,,,

It sounds like it was in backwards, but it's right now. I'm not sure if the con rod is also specific as to which way it goes, so wait for others to reply. Often there is a hole at the bottom of the conrod that lets oil get to the bushing. If you can see the hole with the back plate off, the con rod needs to be turned around. That won't stop the engine from starting, but will deprive the bushing of oil.
