was out bashing when my savage lost all drive so had a look and the spur gear was all stripped. so i got a new one and fitted it. was quite straight forward to do but as i took it back out on its first test it stripped it again after 30 sec warm up!! so i got another one and just fitted it today but iam worried that it will happen again. is there anything i should check first? also i moved the engine closer to the spur so it dont slip. I've checked all other gears and they are fine. what should i be looking for, i was thinking maybe the clutch?

Are you setting the gear mesh properly? If you hold the CB stationary with one finger, you should be able to rock the spur back and forth and feel a little bit of play. If it's set too loose, it will just rip the tips of the teeth off. If it's set to tight, it will heat up and either melt the spur or fry the CB bearings, then chew up the spur.

Also, are you using locktite on the engine mount bolts? If they rattle loose on you, it screws up your mesh. Locktite is your friend if your into nitro or really any RC at all.

there isnt alot of play so i guess i should move the engine away abit. but first i will get some locktite. so do you think this adjustment will sort it coz i dont want to keep buying new spur gears.

Well... it takes a while to get the "feel" of the correct mesh. Buy a couple just in case.

I had a spur on my savage last over 14 gallons of use. I sold the truck to a buddy of mine shortly after putting in a larger engine and smaller spur. I gave him the original spur as well. he asked me how old it was... 3 years 14+ gallons. He just laughed at me and asked if I'd help him in the future.

Make it easy on yourself. Even when you know how the spur should feel when it's right, sometimes it takes several tries to get it there.
Just take a short strip of paper, hardly matters what kind...printer paper, newspaper, cigarette pack wrapper, whatever. Put it between the pinion and the spur and push the two together tightly while tightening down the engine. When the engine is secure, pull out the paper and go.

That is what I use.....it's the old trick that never fails . I used it twice yesterday.....stupid one way bearing.
