I have a savage 4.6 and as the thread title says I'm having problem with spur gear. I have checked the mesh and the CB bearings and they are fine. The spur gear will not hold. After just a couple minutes of running it strips completely. I dont know why its doing this. Savage isnt my regular basher, but Id like it to be. Its a beast when it runs.

what are you running for the spur, is the stock steel or is it nylon. you may also want to check wether your ratio is right. I run a f4.6 with a steel 49t spur with a 17t HARDENED STEEL clutch bell. when you buy the new spur gear it will give you the combo options for the 4.6, and just check your meshing..

I'm running the nylon one and I'm not sure what the CB is. I would imagine that it is stock one that came on it.

I bet a fat babies butt your engine plate is cracked.

Damn, never thought to check that. It always good to get another opinion. You usually look over something small

^ its upside down there ^

Well tore it all apart and no cracks. Put in the new spur and It ran all afternoon until the 3 speed tranny took a dump. Now I have to tear it apart and see whats up. I hear clunking in it. It wont even try to move when its running. spur gear turns like crazy and nothing.

Check grub screws, ring & pinion and spider gears. Also check if your clutch bearings have a wobble in them. Make sure your spur gear nut its not too tight because the slipper might not be able to "slip". Also check your engine mount, that might be cracked.

The driveshafts dont turn at all, on or off the ground. Took the tranny apart and everything seem to be ok. No stripped gears or peices missing. Checked the spur and its bout right. I have no idea whats going on with this thing.

Did you double check for missing grub screws? Usually it will still spin the tires off the ground but possible it won't if they're gone.

Uhmmm I dont remember now. I know that was the problem I had in my revo. It snapped the pin and screwed up a bunch of the gears. I had to go back with ahobby knife and redid the gears in the whole tranny. Ill tear it back down tomorrow and recheck.

Well just a thought that no one seemed to touch on,he said he has a 4.6 savage but he has a 3 speed tranny, odd, they dont come with 3 speeds do they only 2 speeds? The XL has a 3 speed from HPI and it uses bigger dogbones and cups, not sure but it might be to big a tranny for a 2 speed spur...could that be a part of the problem with the spur? As for the tranny not moving the truck did the spur shaft come lose or break inside the tranny?See if you can move the front wheels from spinning the drive shaft and same for rears then see if the whole the thing moves when spinning the spur,at least that will narrow it down to tranny or not.Just some stuff i figured out when i had problems with my savage X.

It appears if the previous owner has put the 3 speed conversion kit in it. All the peices look the same. Anyway a little update. i went back and checked the grub screws because I couldnt remember if I did or not. The one in the rear driveshaft was broken in half. So thats y the rear wasn't spinning. After I fixed that problem there was clicking in the front. Took out the diff and the ring gear is completely shot and the pinion gear is missing 3 teeth. I have no idea how the diff comes apart so I'm just going to order a whole diff. The reason for the ring gear destruction is one of the bearings went bad and gave the diff no support. That put the diff at a bad angle and ruined it.

After you replace your diff, I recommend putting a new locknut on the spur gear assembly. They wear out from frequent removal and assembly. They'll slowly back off while your driving and melt the slipper and the center of the spur.
Also make sure the two screws that go through the engine mount plate into the tranny are in place and tight.

Well I got everything back together and I didnt check the batteries in the reciever and it took off full throttle and smacked a house. I have a lot more problems now.

I know it's wrong to laugh... but I just read the whole thread up to this point then saw this at the end and did just that... laughed. Not in spite, but you have to admit, all those issues all that annoyance and then BAM! Literally hit a wall!

If you don't have bad luck, you ain't got no luck at all man! That totally sucks!

How bad is the damage now? I hit a tree a while back at a pretty good clip and tweaked my 1" extended tvp's a bit, but otherwise was unscathed. A week before that, I hit a 5 inch curb hiding in the grass and it came away with only a gouge in the skidplate. I was really cruising when that happened. 3rd gear, WOT, BAM!@!@#$!$ Truck shot straight up in the air about 7 feet and landed on it's lid... That was about 20 tanks in with my brand new LRP in it. Just made me sick to see that happen!

Hope your next run ends with better luck!
