I use to strip the spur gears clean. Now that i Loc tite the engine bolts now i get a bout 5 mins of run time and the gear slips completely. i used a brand new lock nut, every time i change the gear.i tighten the nut fully and back it off 1/2 turn. I also use red loc tite. i even re scuff the slipper pad and plate. I also have 47/17 stock set up in the truck. Can anyone help will a metal gear help if i change the bell teeth count and spur count would it help. I have the stock 4.6 in the truck.

You will probably have better luck with a 49 tooth spur 17/47 combo is too tall for off road use, also back the nut off just 1/4 turn instead of 1/2.

I used to have a problem with my locknuts becoming unscrewed while I was running.
I eventually figured out how I could make it happen anytime I wanted and also how to fix it.
I now use two steel nuts (not the locknuts with nylon - but two thinner all steel nuts).

Use locktight on both.
Set the first one in place (tighten it down and then loosen it 1/4 turn out - or whatever setting you like).
Then screw the second one down on top of the first.
Once you do that, then counter-screw them against one another.
You'll need two wrenches to do this.
At the same time tighten the outer one while "loosening" the inner one.
They'll only move a smidgen (so you won't be mucking up your setting), but after that they ain't nowhere.

Is more than likely your using too tall of gearing for your application. I had a similar issue with mine running an LRP28. Would work fine for a but running 47/16, but after about 5 minutes (even on flat pavement), the slipper would start slipping when it slammed into second gear. Once it started slipping, it just got worse fast, due to glazing on the pad.

I changed to 49/16 and my issues have gone away entirely. Sure, it's not quite as fast, but what do I want? Something fast for 5 minutes or something that runs all day long? I'll choose the latter every time.

well i changed the clutch and i am retuning the engine. This is the first time i have got the truck running for long than 15 mins. I went with the aluminum hpi clutch. Its stalling a lot thought. I think its running to rich once i get i going well i let ya know if the spur survives. if not i have 15t clutch bell according to the chart i got its a 3.13 ratio compared to your 3.03 ratio so hopefully that works. Thanks for the advice i may even order 49t spur and 16t clutch bell aswell.

I run a 17/49 combo and it is plenty fast for me both on and off road. Still pull wheelies like hell too!

You are striping the spur because your motor is too tight against the spur gears. Take a look at your manual it will tell you how to adjust the engine spacing to the spur gear

i have done so. I realized that but that may or may not be the issue. I waiting on good weather and will see. i need to tune the truck and i had some bad fuel the other day so i will give a try Sunday. I let you guys know. Yet, the other day i had the truck starting to wheelie and it burned at least 3 quarters of a tank so i think i may have fixed the the issue.
