Years ago there were a handful of companies making sprint car conversion kits for RC10's. I searched the world wide webby but most of what I find is 10-15 yrs ago. Anybody still making stuff? I have a recently acquired gold pan and have always been interested In dirt oval sprints. Bueller.......Bueller?

Most of the oval guys i raced with back in the day built custom chassis and towers for thier ae's. I miss the days where skilled folks built so many 1 off's purpose built vehicles.
I may be wrong...but I am going to continue to blame rtr stuff and spec class racing where even if you can build it we won't let you run it anyway.

The rtr market got s lot of people into the hobby for sure but sure killed off the kit building and custom parts builds. Now we get s flood of people that have no idea how to even maintain their vehicles. Used to be we built them so knew them intimately.

Yeah....I helped out a guy at the track a couple weeks ago. Running a high end xray kit and having trouble remembering if it's the positive or negative bullet that gets plugged into his fancy battery first. It's not supposed to be that way....according to me anyway, lol

Used to be you could build an RC10 into a bunch of different configurations. I had at least 3 variations. Monster truck, asphalt car and the original off road car.

Yeah, it's a really sore spot for a lot of old timers. I remember the conversation I had with the owner of our local hobby shop when I first saw Traxxas stuff. I was telling him that crap was going to ruin the hobby. And now not only do we have Horizon helping them by getting rid of nearly every single RC build kit, but now Amazon is dragging clueless people in with promises of speed and easy RTR crap. Smart batteries. Blah! Pre-glued tires on ugly black rims 🤮. They're just waiting for all us old farts to fade away so they can all continue turning the world into idiots so they can make a buck, and not have to hear us bitching.

Calgon... take us back to the 80's!

I was at the track next to a guy Tuesday who is completely new to the hobby. Bought himself a whole lot of stuff to get involved with racing carpet buggy.....high end kit car, paid the extra to have the guys at the hobby shop build it for him. SMH

Tell him you'll race it for him for $10. Then all he has to do is transport it back and forth to the track and buy parts 😃

I think when I started back in the 80's, the only RTR were from ToysR-Us

It was '86 or '87 when Traxxas released their first RC. That was right around the time I built my Kyosho Javelin from a kit, bought the electronics, radio, etc. I was at Joe's Hobby Barn here in town every minute I could be there. There was an old model railroad guru there taking care of the train stuff, and Joe handling the RC crowd. There were always a couple old guys hanging out shooting the 💩 on bar stools at the counter, because Joe ran two local RC clubs. Planes in a town up the road, and RC cars here. The Cat had just showed up there and Joe had it on the counter making fun of it. The shocks were plastic pogo sticks. It literally looked like it came from a Toys'R'Us store because everything looked cheap.

Kyosho still makes stuff I want....some I really want. Might be on my list for early next year....

I have a weak spot for their Legendary cars.

Its somewhat strange to me that yall view the influx of new hobbiest's as a bad thing. I am inclined to believe that increasing the number of people who participate as a positive.

What I remember of the old days of RC are companies struggling to stay afloat. Hobby shops that came and went due to lack of business. Tracks opening for a year or 2 and then closing for lack of interest.

Sure, most of the 'new to RC' people I meet are pretty clueless but most are eager to listen and learn. I see a lot of that happening here on the forum and I'm glad to be a part of it.

I also see the negatives associated with the changes but you know what they say, change is inevitable. I choose to make the best of it. There's only a few people that I get to routinely run RC's with and they were RC stupid when I met them. I've dedicated alot of my time over the years to get people into this hobby and help educate them. I hope we all do the same. I dont want people to view me like those old grumpy stuck up RC guys at the track who look down on everyone. They are why I quit racing a long time ago.

I don't believe anyone said the influx of new hobbiests is bad. The growing number of people with no knowledge or interest in learning how to build tune, and maintain is terrible. The end.

With RTR stuff as a beginner, theres no need to tune and no real need for immediate maintenance. That usually comes from something breaking due to lack of maintenance. Point is we all started somewhere.

I don't believe there is anyone who doesn't understand the convenience and marketing value of rtr either. Let me know when you find a someone who buys an rtr of reasonable quality blows a shock and wants to sell it at 50% the value ....I can always use a bargain that I am more than qualified to fix

To me the building part of this hobby is about building well rounded foundational knowledge. I have recently been rewinding motors again for different performance options....as a result I may use that in a non-rc related context to fix the motor on my turntable.
Moreover, the guy that doesn't know which cable to plug into his battery first, also doesn't know how to use the jumper cables for his real car if he needs to. A valuable piece of knowledge he could have learned through this hobby before even getting a learners permit.
That being said, I help every new hobbiest who wants to learn.....I am happy to buy the cars cheap from the ones who just want me to do it for them.
